How long is your school day doing Preparing + 1?
Okay, so I couldn't fit my whole question in the title of the post, Lol, but I'd like to know approximately how long your school day is if you use Preparing + another program like Beyond or Bigger? From looking at the week samples, it *seems* like a lot on paper, although I realize that may translate differently when it's actually done. I use BJU for math and CLE for reading. CLE is mostly independent, but I do spend the time to *teach* math. We do use R&S for English. Can anyone kind of give me an idea of their schedule? I'm sure this same question has been asked before, but it has been a while since I have been to the board. If there is another link(s) you could direct me to I would certainly appreciate it!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: How long is your school day doing Preparing + 1?
Hiya! I'm doing Preparing and Beyond with my boys, and high school with my dd. The boys start at 9:30 and both are generally done by 12. We add in art and French in the afternoons. We also use BJU math and R&S grammar. We use DIHOR for reading. I think there is a link somewhere, but I can't find it at the moment. We usually start with history, then I have the 10 year old to independent work in Preparing while I do Beyond with the 6 year old. Then ds 6 does the spelling words and copywork in Beyond while I do la and math with ds 10. Then ds 6 goes off to play, ds 10 and I finish up. I'm sure someone will link in the scheduling thread from before. I have a schedule I made using MOTH, but it says "HOD with Josh" so I don't think that would be all that useful to you.

Re: How long is your school day doing Preparing + 1?
I know that you don't add the 4 hrs for Preparing to the 2 1/2 or 3 hrs for Beyond or Bigger together to figure out how long your day will be. They definitely overlap. I'm doing Bigger with LHTH right now, so I'm not much help to you with my schedule.
Here's the recent scheduling thread... viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2093 I know that Carrie is doing Preparing with LHFHG and her older son doing a trial version of the new Ancients guide AND a 2 yo. Julie (my3sons) just started doing BLHFHG with PHFHG. There are probably others on there that may help you, too.
My guess would be that after you get into the guides where your kids know what's expected of them, you could probably finish in 4 hrs or a little more. You'll go back and forth between your kids as they go through parts of the day that need you and don't.

I'm so glad that the ladies have gotten a chance to answer you! Kathleen is right that I'm also doing several programs this year. You can see my schedule at the thread she linked above. Several other ladies on the thread also shared schedules for doing several programs at once.
Realistically, you can do two HOD programs and still be done in 4 hours. This is because Preparing Hearts is approximately 1/3 independent, 1/3 Teacher Directed, and 1/3 Semi-Independent. When you get up to 3 HOD programs, it will most likely take more than 4 hours, depending on which programs you're running and on how independent your kiddos are able to be.
Blessings,
Carrie

Re: How long is your school day doing Preparing + 1?
Thank you, Ladies, for taking the time to answer. And thank you for the link. It was very interesting to see how different people schedule their days. Right now, I usually get my 5yo dd started on some independent work in LHFHG. She likes to do LOTS of workbook pages, which really helps me out, so she will usually do a phonics page from MCP, a handwriting page, and as many pages as she feels like doing in the R&S preschool books. This really gives me time to work with my 3rd grade ds on all of his lessons. Right now, I am using all textbooks with him. I do all of the teaching parts of each subject with him in one sitting from about 9:00-10:00/10:30, then the kids break for about a half-hour to play outside. When they come in, I work with dd on her LHFHG work from the guide, and ds works independently on his "homework" for all the lessons we went over in the morning. This is working for us now, but the work for ds seems so "dry." I feel bad that dd is getting to do all of the "fun" lessons, and he is doing the drudgery of workbooks. I'm afraid he or I may burnout if we keep this up past this year. I am wanting to put him in Preparing next year, and move my dd up to Beyond. When I look at the sample weeks, I realize I am probably going to have to schedule the day differently. And I.DON'T.LIKE.CHANGE. Lol!! We seem to really thrive on a good routine, so I really would need advice on how to work this. Carrie, can you possibly direct me to the link where you describe how you rotate your kids through their work each day. I think you talked about this last spring, how each child rotates through 1-on-1 time with you and their independent work. I did a search, but I received a message that told me my search criteria was too general, and I was unable to dig it up.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

marypoppins,
I felt like you last year...and was doing the textbook approach much the same way as you, too!
I got LHTH to start with my dd who was 3 and my 7 yo was doing textbooks for our 1st year hsing (besides preschool). I did all my "teaching" in one chunk for him and then left him to do the homework while I was having a blast with my little girl. This is what led me to discovering all of HOD's programs - and let me tell you my ds is thriving this year with Bigger! I'd say it will be worth the change for you and your child. I know that my ds is learning so much more and enjoying it!
It will take a while to get into your new routine when you switch - and the one thing that helped me a lot with this was seeing other moms say that they didn't start out at full pace, but eased into it. Giving myself permission to not finish the whole day of plans really relieved a lot of stress on me (and probably on my ds
) as he grew into the different skills that HOD uses that the textbook learning didn't. Things are working beautifully now!

That might just put me over the top, lol.
Actually, the thing that makes me sad is that I had ordered the Bigger manual for my ds to do this year and really *loved* it, but it all looked like a lot when I took into account doing it alongside LHFHG with dd so I sent it back.
This is my first year hsing more than one dc, and I thought I was making things easier on myself putting ds in textbooks this year. It's too late to change this year, plus no more $$, but next year, I will make wiser decisions.

marypoppins,
Here is a link to my most detailed schedule of how I did LHFHG(half-speed) with Bigger last year and am now doing LHFHG full-speed with Preparing this year. Just scroll down to see my very detailed schedules. Is that what you're looking for?

My sister has also just finished LHFHG and is moving up to doing Beyond now with Preparing, so I'm sure with a nudge she'd be willing to post her updated schedule for that.
Blessings,
Carrie
