DOES ANYONE EVER INCORPORATE THE OTHER BOOKS IN WITH LHTH?

Post by savedbyloveandmercy » Thu Aug 21, 2008 2:02 pm

Hi, there. I'll be starting LHTH with my four-year old, and I'm wondering if anyone has added The World God Made (K), A Reason for Handwriting (K), and Singapore EarlyBird Math to this curriculum??
Would that be overwhelming for my son? I think what Carrie has set up is great, but with my son already being 4, and the book being for 2-5 year olds, I'm wondering if it might work to try it. I only have two children right now, so I was thinking it might be a good time to add a little extra to the schedule.
I'm open to any suggestions and opinions!

Thanks so much,
Briana

Hi Briana!
You know your child best. So whatever advice you get from the board is just that. Ideas, suggestions, advice.

So here is my advice... Start LHFHG as is. 60-90 minutes of school for Kindergarten is perfect. And Carrie has set up LHFHG just right!
Spend the rest of the time outside, on a field trip, at the library, on music lessons, whatever. remember that the older they get they will have less time for this and spend more time on school.

Have you looked at the Literature suggestions in the back of the book? Those are great books to get from the library to do extra reading for each unit!

Enjoy,
Dorla

Are you asking about LHTH or LHFHG? If you're asking about LHTH (this is coming from someone who has only used LHFHG so you can take my advice or leave it), I might add the math and handwriting, if you already had the LHFHG guide so you'd have the activities for the math. I wouldn't add the science text book because the K one goes so perfectly with what Carrie has planned. I might also go ahead and do the K fine motor workbooks from LHFHG too and then use the 1st grade one next year when you do LHFHG. This is all what I was thinking about with my dd and then decided to go ahead and go with LHFHG. I think that if you wanted to beef up LHTH then these are all do-able options. I would add it gradually though, and start out with LHTH just as Carrie has it written. I've found that her programs seem simple (in a good way :D ) upon first glance but they really have a lot of meat to them.
Momma to my 4 sweeties:
DD 14 - MTMM and DITHOR (completed LHFHG, Beyond, Bigger, Preparing, CTC, took a couple years off, and now she's back!)
DS 11 and DD 9 - Preparing(completed 2 rounds of LHTH, LHFHG, Beyond, and Bigger)
DD 6 - LHFHG

I'm using LHTH with my dd who was 4 in May. I think it's perfect as is! :D (I actually started it with her last year and thought how much more she'd get out of it as a 4 yo than 3 yo.) We're having a blast with it! Now, if you have extra time that you want to use doing more workbook-type things, I don't think it would hurt anything... I sure don't think it would be necessary. It really has everything I want my dd to learn for pre-K. Some moms here are using LHTH for their child's K year and adding some phonics to it, so I think you'll be surprised as you get going how full it is. I think I'd hold off on the math for now. Singapore seems to advance pretty quickly. More so than other math curriculums I've seen, so I think I'd wait until K to do those.

Just my opinion...Have fun with LHTH!!

Thanks, ladies, for your help. I think I will stick with it, as is. I believe I've already figured out how to set it up to do "LHTH" this year, and then "LHFHG" for two years, using the "K" books, then the "Grade 1" books, and I believe he'll be right on target.
I think that I was just motivated by fear to move ahead, because I got discouraged and my older son fell behind, and I don't want that to happen again, but with prayer, and a reminder that the Lord directed me to this curriculum this year, I realized that He will help me to do what's right for our boys, and not what I may think needs to be done. He knows best, and I'm so thankful that I can turn to Him because He knows our needs. He reminded me with the scripture in Matthew 6:26, and it encouraged me, so here I am, in His rest, and excitedly waiting for all the books to arrive! :D

Thanks, ladies, for the continual support and encouragement that I find here, and even though I may never see your faces, I appreciate the fellowship we can have in His Spirit.

Praising and thanking Him,

Briana

I add Rod and Staff's ABC books. I also read aloud other books to my little ones during the day, but nothing formal. The 30 minutes we use LHTH make me feel like I'm doing something good with them, and they really enjoy it. I'm using it with a 4yo and 2yo. I'm considering starting more formal phonics with the 4yo, as I would love to get him reading independently as soon as possible, but I've pushed this decision off until we have our new baby and become accustomed to her.

What I like the most about LHTH is that it helps me know how to interact with my littles. I was spending so much time with my older son, and just letting the littles run around. LHTH carries over, even after we're done with it, and I use the ideas all day long.

I have added Early Bird 1A/B and 100 EZ Lessons to Little Hands. My 4yo does Little Hands with his 3 yo sister. In the afternoon he does his math and reading along side his 8 yo sister. I sometimes print out the handwriting sheets at donnayoung.org that go with 100 EZ lessons but most of the time we use paper I have around here.
