New here, and have a few questions
New here, and have a few questions
Hi- I am Vicki, a SAHM to 4 girls, and this is our first year homeschooling. I have 2nd, 6th, and 8th graders and a 28 mos old. I have curriculum all picked out for my older 2, a mix of Sonlight, Rod & Staff, and Apologia among a few others. I am considering HOD fo rmy 2nd grader, but am not familiar with it all. I would love some reviews and also where do I place my 2nd grader in the program?
I have heard some good things about HOD, but at the time I was not really considering it. BTW- she is turning 8 on Aug 31st, and reads at about a mid 3rd grade level.
Does HOD only go up to 5th grade, what to do after that?
Thank you for helping!

VickiW,
Just wanted to say welcome! I noticed your post "getting lost", so I wanted to bring it back up so others have a chance to answer!
I am probably not the best source for placement since I have only used Little Hands To Heaven, and have just recently begun Little Hearts For His Glory. I can offer a review of why I like HOD however. I like the way Christ is at the center of this program. My daughter is receiving a rich education/foundation in Christ and is learning how He is at the center of all things. I feel that with HOD I am laying the perfect Godly foundation for her while adding a perfect balance of academics as well. She is incredibly engaged in all of the activities/lessons that are written into the program. As a result, all of the material that is covered is remembered by her, so the lessons are "sticking". Carrie, the author, truly has a gift for creating lessons that are Godly, appealing, fun, educational, and memorable for the child.
I also love the layout of the guides. Your "day" is easily viewed in the two-page format with each subject area contained in a "box-style" format. You simply read the lesson in each box and implement. You then check-off the box and move on to the next. There is no flipping of the guide to refer to some other tid-bit of information that needs to be looked up. It is absolutely, for certain, open-and-go. And with my level of impatience with having to wade through information or flip here and there, HOD is perfect! I do not feel stressed a bit trying to implement the program. I usually don't even need to preview the lesson until we are about to begin because the layout is so user friendly.
Another thing I appreciate is the activities/art lessons. Typically, if I know there is an art activity to be done with a lesson, I want to run as far as I can! I feel burdened knowing I have to collect stuff, prepare things, and then go through with some messy, drawn out activity that my daughter probably won't even learn from. Well, with HOD the art activities are wonderful! They are purposefully connected to the lesson that is being studied. They relate in a meaningful way that really engages the child and rounds out the main focus. Gathering items for the activities are a breeze. I don't think I have ever had to go out and buy something, it has been here at the house. I can honestly say that with HOD, I actually look forward to the art activities and I try to join in with my daughter and create whatever it is that she is creating. This has actually turned into a special time for us because my daughter sees me taking the time to sit with her and create with her and learn with her.
Really, I could go on and on about how wonderful I think HOD is. It just turned out to be a perfect fit for our family.
I hope that you will find some more answers here!

Re: New here, and have a few questions
Hi Vicki and welcome to HOD. It does go beyond 5th grade actually. Preparing Hearts for His glory goes 5th-6th grade with the extension packs. But that is just a guide. I believe there are some using it with a 7th grader even. I am currently using Bigger (we started and then took a break for Summer) with a 6th grader and I feel like it is perfect for her. She is a sharp and an avid reader. It has been a perfect fit. I might have chosen Preparing first but really wanted the American History for her. It has been a perfect fit. I have 4th-6th graders in BHFHG. Look at the placement chart link that was given and look more at skill levels. You should get a really great idea of what program your child fits in best by looking at the placement chart. Happy looking!

Re: New here, and have a few questions
I was looking for something else and came across this link. If you go down to the middle and read what Carrie said there is some info that I think might be helpful. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=327&hilit=cycle Also you might want to look at the topic below yours (at least it is when I am posting it ) called Future plans for a HOD four year history cycle? The bottom links have information that will help you see what will be available each coming year in HOD.

VickiW,
The ladies are doing a great job of helping you! If you get a chance to post where your little one falls on the placement chart that was linked above as far as reading, writing, and math, that would help us advise you better!
Blessings,
Carrie

Sorry about that, she would be in the Beyond...
Re: New here, and have a few questions
Vicki,
I just wanted to clarify, will this be your daughter's second grade year or will this be her third grade year? If she's a third grader, you may need to take another look at "Bigger Hearts...." (which is targeted for ages 7-9). If she's a second grader, then "Beyond..." would be good for her since it's targeted at ages 6-8 (from what you've shared).
If you are planning to use Singapore for math, as scheduled in our guides, then you will want to give your daughter the Singapore placement test. I'd start with 1B to see how she does. If she passes, then test her for 2A. If she doesn't pass, then she should start in 1A. Here's the link to the Singapore test:

Let us know what you think, if you get a chance. Then, we can help you better!
Blessings,
Carrie
