Easiest DITHR genre to start with

Post by Motherjoy » Sat Aug 02, 2008 3:12 am

I am using Preparing and DITHR 2/3 with my 10yo. He is a slower, less confidant reader, so I wanted to start out with the lower level. I really want the reading portion of his year to be fun and help him to feel more confidence in his abilities. So, what is the easiest/funnest genre to start with?

I think that everyone (kids & adults) would have different preferences as to which genre they like best. So, you as the mother would probably have a good idea of which would interest your child best after reading through the descriptions of the genres. You could pick one. Or, here's another idea... If you have books for all the genres already picked out, you could get them out and let your child pick which one to start with. Or get a few for each genre from the library if you're going that route and do the same thing.

I love biographies and historical fiction. I'm sure for boys especially adventure is towards the top of the list. I've just started DITHOR with my 8 yo. We've really enjoyed what we've done so far! I'm sure you will too!

I agree with Kathleen. I would actually find a book that he was very excited to read then make that fit DITHR since that really is the strength of the program that you pick the book and it works for you. With a reluctant reader I think that is the way I would go. :D

We've got all boys, and "humor" and "adventure" are always at the top of their lists! Starting with books that are slightly below their reading level helps them know they can do it and get more excited too, so I always start the year with books on the easier side for them. Be sure to pick the kickoffs and wrap-up activities with your ds's favorite interests in mind too, they always get excited about those!
