This is just an amazing God thing!!

Post by momof2n2 » Tue Jul 22, 2008 10:28 am

:D I will try to make a long story short, however, brevity is not my strong point.

Our family has been offered the opportunity to go on a vacation with our friend and their extended family to Nag's Head. It will be incredibly affordable. The house is directly on the beach and stunning. My husband and I prayed about it Sunday night and he was going to inquire at work Monday about the time off. Meanwhile I was really peace-filled about whether or not it would work out. I am rarely peacefilled! I am usually teetering with enthusiasm, or sweating under anxiety. The peacefulness was great. Then, yesterday it suddenly popped into my head, "Stewart's first science book is One Small Square - Seashore!" I thought, "whoa! What a great fit that would be." Hours later I was looking up the directions to Nag's Head and saw that it was near Kitty Hawk... "Hmm, wait a minute, why does that sound familiar? Oh yeah, the Wright Bros. THE WRIGHT BROS!?! That is part of his curriculum as well!" When I spoke with my husband on the phone near the end of the day yesterday, he asked what I was feeling about going with our friends, because he could have the time off of work if we wanted to take it. I told him I still was feeling this amazing sense of peace, and I told him about the Seashore and Wright Bros. books. Neither one of us believe in irony. We do believe in an amazing and compassionate God... who seems to have a sense of humor, as well. :D
Isn't that amazing? Talk about field trips!
SO - we are going to move the Wright Bros. [units 28 - 32ish, I think] up and begin that the first of August and I am going to begin Seashore [Units 1 - 4ish] early, too. We won't do a full day, though, b/c it IS still summer here in NY and that will be over soon enough. :P Then when we do school on our normal schedule, at the end of August, I will have to smooth things up a bit, but I have hope that it will just be a huge blessing to us.
So - pray for no hurricanes! :D

I love your story and I just had to share what happened to us the first day we started homeschooling. It was April and ds had just turned 3 and I decided to start doing some simple preschool "theme of the week" things with him that I'd found for free online. Well the first week's theme was "snow". Can you believe that God sent a GIGANTIC snowstorm just for us  on the first day we started?

So when are you going? My family will be there the last few days of Sept, first week of October. Love the Outer Banks!

Make sure you get the kids down to the lighthouse at Cape Hatteras (about 1 hour, maybe a bit more, drive)--lots of shells down that way--I think because of the shape of the OBX--Hatteras is the furthest eastward point, with Nags Head west of Hatteras--check it out on a map--that elbow out in the Atlantic is Hatteras. Beach is wider down Hatteras way, too. If you go to the lighthouse, make sure you visit the old site of the lighthouse right at the ocean's edge, as well as visiting it at its new site. Reason for the move--erosion--fear the lighthouse would wind up in the Atlantic Ocean--great lessons on the seashore right there. Waves tend to be bigger down at Hatteras, as compared to NH, too. Lots of surfers down there on days with the right conditions. Let's see what else--there is an aquarium in Manteo--haven't been personally. Oh yeah, if you're there in the summer--The Lost Colony--but only through August 20th. http://www.thelostcolony.org/index.htm Nat'l Park Service has a park at Fort Raleigh on Roanoke Island--1st attempt at English settlement in America--which disappeared and became known as The Lost Colony. http://www.nps.gov/archive/fora/raleigh.htm and Roanoke Island Festival Park http://www.roanokeisland.com/ I've been to the NPS site, but not the Festival Park. Manteo is just across the causeway from Nags Head. Don't miss Jockey's Ridge--huge, huge naturally formed sand dunes south of Kitty Hawk--they do hang-gliders off of it, but families often climb to the top--done that--and there is a kite store across the street--perfect place for flying a kite.

Hope you have a great time!

thanks for the encouragement and what great links, Jen. I usually have months and months to plan a vacation and this is so abrupt. I appreciate your suggestions! I have no idea what we might go and see, except for the Wright Bros. Monument.
