Fewer than 5 days a week anyone?

Post by MarciaA » Mon Jul 14, 2008 8:25 pm

I have searched and couldn't find anything already written on this topic, but I thought I had read about it somewhere....

Anyway, here's my Q...
Do any of you do HOD on a 3 or 4 day schedule instead of 5 days? We will be doing LHFHG and I am looking at all of our co-ops, playdates, etc. and wondering when we will do school?????

If you do fewer than 5 days a week, what's your schedule? Do you combine "boxes" to still get it all completed within the week or do you just swing a full day into the next week and never complete a full week within a calendar week?

Thanks for any insight! (Other than "just say no" for the spring semester!)

I think we have done 5 days in a week twice in the last year. We school year round. So we do 3-4 days a week, sometimes less. We take off weeks as need for various reasons. I just make sure we are on schedule to complete the book in a year. So I just do what ever day is next - every so often we split a day over two days.

You this will be my first year with HOD , but last year with MFW I usually did only 4 full days and sometimes got that 5th day in. alot of the time the things we did was double up on history one day then math the next etc. to get that fifth day in or we just didn't do some of the things at all. Usually things that didn't matter much or were more for fun. I figure with the co-ops and our mom's group they were doing quite a few fun things aways so missing something here and there is no big deal. This year I plan to do the same thing with HOD once you get into the swing fo things you can figure things out.

We are doing 4 days a week. We never get that full unit week done in a regular calender week, but that is ok with me...we will finish when we finish.

So this is week 4 of us doing LHFHG, but we will finish unit 3 on Thursday. I also figure that if life happens and we have to do a 3 day week sometimes, then that is not a problem either. And part of the beauty of homeschool is if we needed to do school on a Saturday so we could have a beach day during the week then we can do that if we choose. I try not to do that so we can maintain somewhat of a schedule, but it is an option we have.

We do at this point always manage to do a full day (the 2 pages) 'cause it only takes about an hour and a half, so we still have plenty of time for everything else we need to do.

I'm trying to decide how I want to do this myself. If we do our co-op, we'll be gone most of Friday each week or Monday (I have 2 to choose from), so I would need to get it done in 4 days...I would rather do that than wait until Monday to do day 5...only because it BOTHERS me! (slight OCD?)

Anyway, if I do that, we would just do an extra 'box' each day in order to finish on Thursday. I also want us to finish by the end of May if possible, and that won't happen if we skip too many days. I've tentatively laid out our school year with time off for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and that leaves us 4-5 weeks of wiggle room for sick days, unexpected vacation time or other unexpected events. Our school year here is from July 1st to June 30th...according to our Regs. manual. I have to turn in my last report by mid-June, so that's what I mean by wiggle room.

Wow! This turned out really long. I guess I need to think about this some more...but I plan to just get it all in within the 4 days if we go with a 4-day schedule. Just keep in mind that your days will be longer than if you do a 5-day schedule. Could you do any school in the morning before co-op or in the afternoon when you return?

OP - to answer your question, I did Beyond this year with DS#1 for 2nd grade. Most weeks we only did it three days a week for the first 2/3 of the year, and then we went to four days a week. We have CBS on Wednesdays, which we will do again this year. We did some school in the afternoons, but I simply couldn't do a full day, so I felt, at the beginning of the year. We did co-op on Friday. I did NOT try to do 5 unit days each week. We just kept plugging along and did one day whenever we had full days. That being said, we only got thru unit 27 or 28 and I am okay with that. We did our LA and our math separately and even on Wednesdays so we weren't behind on those. I will likely never finish Beyond. [snicker]

Next year... we will still do Wednesdays at CBS and I think I will try to do a full day with one or the other child. I can't do two full days in a few hours, I do not believe. I am not sure yet about going to co-op. Leaning toward no. For what they give my family, they seem to take more away, in this season of our lives. Maybe another year or two I will feel the pendulum swing back the other way. :D:D:D

IHT-
if you do the friday co-op, I don't think you can really expect to do much afterward, unless you left at lunch time. :D It is exhausting and there are a lot of demands on the parents. BUT, if you don't teach in the co-op you may find your kids don't get a lot of the classes you want and you could just take stuff to do there with say, one child if s/he doesn't get into a class at that time.
Now if you did the Monday co-op... you could probably do school in the AM then do that after lunch.
I don't think we will do either this year. After 3 years of co-ops, I need a break.

Have you considered not finishing the entire guide in the year? I know that sounds weird but we did part of LHFHG and Part of Bigger last year. This year we will do a four day HOD week and one day Bible and other things. It's going to work out perfect for us. Just thinking that since you seem to be in the pressure cooker already  maybe this could work for you as well. We do stay on track with LA and Math and to me that is what determines grade level. So just a thought. :D

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I wanted to stay involved in all that I have available (co-ops, HS playgroups, etc.) and find which one or two groups really fit well for us. So, I know after Christmas our schedule will lighten.

As for not trying to finish within a year...I don't mind taking longer than "normal" to finish, but I have to plan with the year in mind because...DH is only agreeing to homeschool for one year right now. My plan is that God changes his heart through this year and DS stays home for many years to come, but I know that it's possible DS will be in public school next year. So....with that in mind, I want to get in as much as I can by the end of the public school year with hopes that DS is doing SO well that DH can't even fathom sending him to public school, kwim? (Or to teach DS so much that he excels even more if he ends up in public next year).

My obsessive compulsiveness is peeking in and making me worry. I want to know every little detail before I start, which I know is impossible. I know we'll make it. It is helpful to know that some of you break the "5 day rule" too

Marcia,

The ladies have given you great ideas of how to make HOD work for you. At our house, we have done a 4 day plan in some of our past years, just finishing the rest of the guide in the first 9 weeks of the following school year.

I will also say that we do not worry about being on Day 1 on Monday. I don't pay any attention to that. We just do the next day as it comes up. But, we do strive for forward motion, trying to do a day within a day for easier tracking. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

I am so glad that I found this post. We will not be able to do 5 days due to a rather hectic Tuesday schedule. We are doing Master's Academy on Tuesday mornings and then I teach preschool/kindergarten karate in the afternoon and follow that with girl scouts and gymnastics. I love the idea of adding an extra box each day to stay on the weekly schedule. I will definitely start with that approach. But if we take a bit longer to do a week...oh well. That is the beauty of homeschooling! We are registering with our state as year round anyway so it will all work out in the end. 8)

BTW, in case you are wondering why I am scheduling such a crazy Tuesday...I am only scheduling set events on Tue or Wed so that we can have 5 day weekends to travel to see family, go to the beach, take extended field trips, etc.
