Preparing Hearts for His Glory:
This week we studied Wars and Revolutions, so it was an exciting week for Emmett! We had some good discussions about Peter the Great being known for his pursuit of wisdom and the parallels to Solomon in Ecclesiastes. I love these Biblical connections and the fact that we pull out the Bible so much each and every day for our homeschool day! For Storytime, we've been reading The Wonderful Winter. We sometimes break up the readings between me and my older sons, as the readings are longer and my voice has been prone to give out (allergies), but this book is incredible! It has been a favorite of Emmett's! We also find the places we are reading about on the globe, and we've been learning about meridians/longitude, etc. Emmett read about the Stuarts reigning in England, while Louis XIV reigned in France. He researched engravings, as during this time engravings were the primary method of making pictures. Emmett made an engraving of his favorite Beanie Balz, Wave, for his history project, and it turned out to be pretty cute!
For creative writing in Poetry Appreciation of Robert Louis Stevenson Emmett used RLS's poem "My Treasures" for inspiration. This assignment was perfect for Emmett because he is somewhat of a collector of random 'special' items. He has the acorn from when we went hiking 4 years ago, the little car we found buried in our backyard when we did some landscaping, the bottle cap from a coke bottle he drank with his brothers after working hard outside, and more. We worked on it together, with me writing as we did, and then he copied it at the end.
For science, Emmett is enjoying reading biographies of various scientists. Here is is 5 question assignment about Pasteur...
In Math he has been working one time and conversions within it...
What a good week!

Julie

United States II High School:
Wyatt has a goal of working through the first 8-9 units of his USII high school guide at the end of this school year, so he can take one extra day off a week his senior year next year. It is going well! He has already found a good routine with his new guide, and there are many new 'favorites' he is enjoying. It is book fair season, which means life gets pretty crazy for our family with Heart of Dakota! So, here are some pictures of this week, starting with all of our Book Fair rugs we power-washed and hung on our porch to dry to get ready for our Heart of Dakota booth...
USII History Notebook with Wyatt hard at work at his table...
Science learning about the Moon Cycles...
Here I am holding Wyatt's history book he is narrating on, and here Wyatt is in his traditional pose for narrating on his favorite couch...

Missions to Modern Marvels:
Riley has been reading about The Assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F Kennedy. He read about the hippie counterculture rebelling agains Vietnam War and traditional American values. He also read about Robert Kennedy's assassination at 42 years of age. He listened to Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream Speech," and was sad to read he was just 39 years old when he was assassinated. He also did part of the next unit about Dictators, Terrorists, and Assassins, as he did school 5 days this week. One of his favorite things was the history project where he made Czechoslovakian cookies...
MTMM History Notebook...
Nature Journal entries...
Evolution: The Grand Experiment...
