BJU Literature

My son will be doing MTMM for 9th grade, but will be doing Bob Jones 9th grade literature instead of the DIHOR program. I know that by itself BJU Lit. is worth 1/2 credit. In WG, HOD adds several books to BJU. My daughter did this last year and did great. She loves to read and is a fast reader. My son is different. Since the extra books are not necessary for credit, I was considering dropping them. I just wanted to know if anyone else has done this.

My understanding the BJU is half a credit if you do it as BJU schedules it will all the worksheets and tests, as well as other extra things in the teachers guide. Carrie skips all those in order to fit in the novels, so the novels aren't extra. My son is a slow reader and has dysgraphia and at that point he wasn't quite up to doing all the novels so we did cut 3 from the boys pack and slowed down the reading a bit with the goal that by the following year he could do the lit as written. This worked well for us. He did the WH guide and did very well with the lit.

I asked a similar question when we did the WG guide for my oldest. Here was Carries reply:


"This is a good question. Honestly, as far as the high school English credit goes, there are no hard fast rules as to what constitutes a credit. Since the areas of literature, composition, and grammar are typically combined to earn the credit, virtually endless combinations are possible.  

While it is true that the BJU lit. is 1/2 credit, and the combination of Essentials in Writing and Rod and Staff would equal another 1/2 credit, it is also true that most literature courses utilize at least one or more full-length novels as part of their literature credit. To this end, we have added novels to the BJU literature to both make a stronger credit and to bring a more CM style of literature study into the credit.  

Since we are not formally studying those particular novels, but are instead employing the techniques of oral narration, written narration, Common Place Book Entries, etc. with them, in my opinion, the novels function to round out the credit without really pushing it into an honor's level course. Your opinion may vary, and as the parent you could designate it as honor's level on the transcript if desired.
