Principles of Math-Book 1 for an 8th grader

We will be using RevtoRev for 8th grade this year. Ds has never really enjoyed math, he prefers reading, but really understands the math concepts and does well at solving the problems often skipping steps in his work, which I have to have him explain how he got to the end sometimes. But it is his least favorite thing to do and spends more time dreading it than it actually takes him to do the lesson. Last year we used Saxon 8/7 and almost completed it. I was thinking of using Book 1 to encourage at least a like of math for him, with the reading it involves plus showing that math does have a purpose beyond just busy work, or "torture" as he refers to it. The topics covered, especially near the end, are similar to those we covered last year and seem to match closely to our state SOL for 8th grade math. If we need beyond, we could pick up the last of the Saxon from last year. I am concerned this may put him behind as he moves to HS but at this point I was wondering if Book 1 could encourage him. I think Carrie and Julie are planning to start POM this year in book 2. They are skipping book one. Book One is interesting and that is why I chose to use it instead of Singapore. I thought my dd might just like the interestingness of the book. She started it this year and she is absolutely loving it.

We completed Singapore 6 right about the time of the searching for new math because of all the changes that were happening at the time with the Singapore resources and so we went into Saxon before POM came along. Now because it looks so interesting I didn't want him to miss out on some good instruction and possible inspiration.

Our son finished Singapore 6B and went int POP Level 2 - it's been working great! So, that would probably work for your kiddo too. We are really enjoying it and finding it easy to implement!
