Creative writing

Post by scrapper4life » Tue May 10, 2016 3:05 pm

If I choose different grammar program than R&S, how does that affect writing? In other words, it says in the summary of Preparing that creative writing is included weekly. Is that accomplished through the R&S resource? I guess I'm thinking of some practical things like letter writing, how to write a paragraph, essay, outline, etc. I am considering Analytical Grammar resources because of the DVDs. I just found them and love the price as compared to BJU distance learning. However, AG looks to cover grammar only, not writing. If I have to add writing though, it may lose the cost perk. Still.looking for video lessons to help with LA...

Creative writing is written in the plans of Preparing separately from Rod and Staff, however the things you listed aren't considered creative writing. Those things are all included in Rod and Staff at the Preparing level. In the levels above Preparing there is a writing program that is scheduled as part of the plans that includes paragraphs and essays, but things like letter writing, oral reports etc are part of Rod and Staff. Rod and Staff is so thorough.

Thank you for the reply.

Can I ask what other types of writing are scheduled in Preparing? I looked but could not find.

I will have to go back in and look at the higher guides as well. I didn't see separate writing instructions. I'm sure I just over looked it.

Thanks again!

The writing in Preparing is scheduled as part of the Poetry study. If you look at the first week plans on day 2 you can see an example. The student also learns to write written narrations starting in Preparing.

In CTC Write with the Best Vol1 is scheduled, RTR has IEW Medieval writing lessons scheduled, Rev to Rev has The Wonderful World of Creative Writing and MTMM has Write with the Best Volume 2 scheduled.

If we use R&S 3 instead of 4 with Preparing, will we be covering enough writing curriculum for this level?

Both level 3 and level 4 are scheduled in Preparing. You pick the appropriate level. Those coming through HOD following the guides as written will be doing Level 3. Those that fast paced grammar in Beyond or Bigger or came to HOD from something else sometimes do level 4.

I think for a 9 yo you'll be absolutely fine with the weekly creative writing lessons, the R & S 3 English lessons, and the other writing assignments that are planned across the various subject areas (i.e. written narrations in history, DITHOR connections, vocabulary work, etc.) make for 'enough' writing for a 9 yo. Bigger Hearts was enough for my 9 yo last year, and PHFHG will be enough for my 9 turning 10 yo this year! This pacing also fit my oldest 2 sons well, and they are thriving with difficult writing programs in upper middle school and high school with HOD. HTH!! :D :D :D
