Sorry that I have so many questions. I figured I am better off starting a new thread for this question. I think we have decided to do Res to Ref with my 14 year old special Ed 9th grader. I am trying to figure out whether she can handle the writing in Res to Ref or if we should back down and do the one from CTC. She has done very little writing as it is so difficult for her. Last year in co-op she had a short story/mystery writing class and this is her final story (it took 5 weeks for her to do this, each week they worked on one element of the story such as characters, clues and such.....time spent on it was one 45 min class time each week and probably 30-60 min of homework each week with lots of guiding from both her teacher and myself).

There is a woman name Angela. She is an investigator. One day Angela met Bob & Abby Iris.
Bob tells Angela that a rare book is missing. Angela asks Bob what happened. Bob says, “when I came home I was going to read a book. When I went into the library I saw a sash. Then I saw that the side table was broken. Then I saw that the window was open, and finally I saw that the safe is open and the book was gone.” Angela looks in the library she looks at the clues. Bob tells Angela that he has three friends that he suspects could have taken it. Angela grabs the sash from the floor then Bob & Angela head out.
First, they went to Steven’s house. Angela asks Steven if she could go into his room. Steven let her and she went into his room and she realizes that he has no sashes. Steven asks Angela if she could find his cell phone. Angela looks around his house for his phone (took about 30 minutes) and found it. Then Angela & Bob leave Steven’s house.
Next, They went to Kevin’s house. Angela asks Kevin if she could see his room. Kevin lets her. When she went in there she realizes that here are paintings. Kevin asks Angela to find his paint brushes. Angela searches the house for the paintbrushes and she found them. Bob & Angela leave Kevin’s house.
Finally, they go to Erin’s house. Angela asks Erin if she could go into her room. She let her. Angela goes into Erin’s room and realizes there are many sashes. Angela tries to match the sash that she has on her hand to Erin’s sashes and figures it out. Angela tells Bob that the sash matches Erin’s sashes. Bob asks Erin why she took the book. Erin says “those rare books are expensive and my parents couldn’t afford it”. Angela asks Erin where is the book. Erin says, “it’s on my bookshelf.“ Angela searches her bookshelf and found the rare book.
Erin says she is sorry for stealing. Bob forgives her. Erin gives Bob the book. Angela loves it when they forgive.

So....for those who have done Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons, do you think she could handle it or should I to drop down a level to the writing program in CTC?
Thanks!!

Re: Which writing program to use....special ed 9th grader
My experience with MHBW was that it was difficult for my very literal ds. I would probably do the CTC program and only expect what is reasonable for her.
