Has Anyone Used the VideoText or HS Math Options?

Post by Lynn3ggb » Wed Jun 03, 2015 8:32 am

I am not a math oriented person. I am very comfortable with all things Language Arts. Past some basic algebra, however, I am no help to my kids in this subject. I would really like comments from anyone who has used the Highschool math options for HOD. I have three children who will be using HOD for the 2015-2016 school year. My 18 yr old dd will be sharing the history/logic/bible part of the WG guide with my 15 yr old dd. My 13 yo ds will either be in Rev to Rev or MTMM with extensions.

Both of my girls are comfortable with math and self motivated. My 18 yr old dd will be using TabletClass Math as it seems to work well for her. That leaves me needing to find a program to fit my 15 yr dd and my 14yr son who is less confident with math and resistant to one on one teaching from me. I am wondering if VideoText will work well for both of them. I am thinking that my son needs the review it offers at the beginning and my dd could move ahead at her own pace.

I would appreciate any advice or suggestions from anyone using HOD's math choices. We have used many math programs over the years but I am not familiar with Carrie's choices. I realize I can use any program I wish, but I would love to know if other families have had success with HOD's selections. Because Math is my weakness, I am easily bewildered and become ineffective at making choices in this area. As I am researching and preparing to purchase curriculum for the upcoming year, I would love to have direction from anyone with experience with VideoText and Foersters.

Blessings

We are using Foerster's and my husband is teaching because it is his forte :D Foerster's is more intense, and in your situation, I might do Video Text. HTH 8)

I would also look at VideoText. I have a friend who is not good at math and her children were not doing so great either. VideoText was perfect.

I also know that Carrie has shared that her oldest really struggled with math as well. She ended up using VideoText for him and he did very well in it. For me, my oldest is okay in math and my two younger kids are math whizzes. For my oldest, my plan is to order Foeresters a year before she needs it and read the book cover to cover. I may choose VideoText for her depending on level of understanding. My plan for my younger two though is to use Foeresters because I think they will do very well with it.

I personally like a book approach to learning math. For me, the video things seems a little challenging because you will also need to keep up with what they are learning. This way, if they have questions, then they can ask you and you can use the answer key and help them. With both programs, they have excellent answer keys and both programs actually have videos. I think the VideoText is a great program and especially great at getting kids caught up if they aren't at the level they need to be at before starting algebra. It includes pre-algebra concepts in the algebra series. The Foerester's does not include pre-algebra concepts. So if you go into Foerester's, you will want to have used a pre-algebra course prior to using it.

Thanks for the input, ladies.

Nealewill,

I know exactly what you mean about preferring a book approach. I do think I am leaning towards the videotext for my son though, just to have the benefit of visual explanations. I also like that they provide the notes for you. I think that will be really helpful for him since he despises the practice of putting pencil to paper for any reason... We are working through the Saxon 7/6 text practice problems for summer review, and relearning any lessons he has blanked on. Since he will be starting 8th grade, perhaps if he begins VideoText he will be able to move through to geometry so he will have that as well for the ACT/SAT.

I may try Forester's Alg I for my daughter. She is going into 9th grade. I don't like to lose momentum during long breaks, so she is working through No-Nonsense Algebra as a summer skills building activity.

Thanks for your advice. It is much appreciated.
