Ahead in R&S english

Post by montanamom » Mon May 11, 2015 12:21 pm

My dd 10 is finishing up CTC as her 4th grade. She has always excelled in grammar and was complaining about R&S 4 being to easy at the beginning of the year. Her Iowa Basic Test came back with an NPR (National % Rank) of 99 for her ELA (English- Language Arts) TOTAL, so I figured that it was indeed to easy for her and let her jump into R&S 5 studying on her own and taking each chapter test. She 'aced' each test and finished the book. I believe that I've read that a student in HOD should get through R&S 6 by 8th grade. So my question is what should I do next year for a 5th grader who is ready to go into R&S 6. Should I...1. take a complete break from grammar, 2. do just the worksheets from R&S 5 (& hope she doesn't get bored 'redoing' the concepts), 3. go ahead with R&S 6 (& figure out something else for 6-8th grades), or 4. use a different grammar program for the 'gap' years????

I'd half pace 6, 7 and 8. That will have her finishing in grade 10. Then just be done. If needed, do the workbook and test book for book 8 in grades 11 and 12, just to keep things sharp.

If it were me, I would do the worksheets for next year and then take 6 and spread it out over 2 years. This would get you close being done with MTMM and R&S 6 at the same time. What are your thoughts on this?

I guess I would also insert a year of worksheets in there if you need one more year.

My son is going to finish R&S 5 with CTC for 5th grade. He sails through R&S as well.

I am thinking he will probably finish 7 by the end of 8th, and book 8 by the end of 10th.

I would do the half pace idea of 6, 7, and 8 through 10th. I have heard 6 is quite a bit harder then book 5, so 1/2 pace could be nice.
Thankful for Jesus Christ, my DH, our four children, and homeschooling. Homeschooled since 2007

You could do the worksheets for a year if you wanted to keep things fresh. I will say that Rod and Staff 7 is much harder than the previous years. My ds has done very well up until this year and 7 has been a big challenge. I am so glad we only had to go through half of it this year for high school.
