Help for 4 year old... Right placement?

Post by Mrsmarcum » Sun May 03, 2015 7:04 pm

Hi everyone,
Next school year, we are planning to start little Hands to Heaven. I purchased it along with the other materials that go with it. I just started looking at it seriously to plan for next year. My son already knows all of his letter names. My concern is that we will be spending the year on that instead of moving on to reading words. He will turn 5 in November.
Do you think we are in the right book?
Thanks! I also will be starting with my daughters in 3/4th grade next year. They are doing Preparing Hearts.

Yes, LHTH is the right guide. First, it isn't just letter names. They are also learning the letter sounds, numbers, colors, Bible stories, working on fine motor and gross motor skills, and story telling. If you find part way through that he is ready for phonics instruction, you can always add that to LHTH. Summer families add the Rid and Staff ABC series workbooks (HOD schedules a few in LHFHG). Others add in handwriting or math.

Yes, I would definitely do LHTH. My first son also had a November b-day and was very bright. He knew all his letters, numbers, colors, etc, but he still loved LHTH and learned so much! The guides get more challenging as they progress and it's best to stay within the recommended age ranges. We kind-of hurried through LHTH with him and now, in Beyond, I'm having to slow him down a bit b/c he needs to mature in his writing ability/endurance a bit before Bigger. We're doing what Stephanie suggested with our second son. He'll turn five in June this year and we are currently doing LHTH (we're doing school this summer b/c we took a lot of time off while moving last fall). At some point I plan on adding phonics and maybe the Rod and Staff fine motor skill workbooks from Little Hearts for His Glory...and maybe K Math too. LHTH is a sweet program--I know you guys will have a lot of fun!!

Hi Crystal! I think you will really enjoy LHTH, and you can always begin phonics earlier if you like. The phonics programs in LHFHG are not tied to the daily plans, so you can just follow the pacing noted in the phonics' introductions.
