I need help with a good plan for my kiddos. My b/g twins are almost 14 and going into 8th grade (reading/math at a much lower level). My youngest son is almost 10 and going into 4th grade (close to grade level). All three have dyslexia with a mix of dysgraphia and discalculia thrown in. We are working through the Barton program which is going well but the challenge that I have is that at this stage I have to read everything to them (they can read but this is a restriction in the Barton program to retrain their reading habits). We listen to a lot of audio books!
Math and Language take at least 3 hours of our day. Is it really possible to do two levels of HOD when I have to read everything in both levels or is finding a level in between the two to combine them best?
My youngest would really fit well in Bigger Hearts and the olders would like to do American History, too, but that seems too young for them, though I could certainly add in a few things. Next year they will be reading on their own so this year is a flexible year. My goal is to have a curriculum to finish out their schooling. I've been way too eclectic over the years which hasn't helped my struggling learners!
I'm open to any ideas, thoughts, and opinions!
Thanks!

Re: Placement for kids with dyslexia
Where do you think the older two would place on the placement chart?
As for Bigger, you should be able to find at least one book per genre of storytime as an audiobook. I think there were two our public library didn't have any options for (so I am having my MIL record them for me
). The history and science readings aren't too much each day, so the reading for you for that guide will be doable for sure (HOD actually expects you to read the books to our children in Bigger with the exception of what ever you are using for reading and extensions if used).
As for using Bigger with the youngest, how is his writing? I don't think I would go below Bigger with his age, but you may have to make some modifications based on how much he can copy and write. I know some families dealing with dysgraphia use typing instead of handwriting. Others just limit the amount of writing. It is just something to think about and start planning.

Re: Placement for kids with dyslexia
It's hard to decide where to place them on the chart. They can certainly understand grade level work when I read/discuss with them and since they will be doing Barton for all of their language program and Math Mammoth, I'm not sure if those criteria apply. Their on-their-own level is probably 4-6th grade depending on the child/subject. They will not be doing copywork or written dictation but they will do oral/written narration, mapping, projects, etc. Written work is simply assessed on content, not other areas of language.
I know we have at least one year that will be a lot of adjusting but things should even out before they graduate.....at least that's my prayer!
I hope that makes sense.

One idea would be to do Preparing for the olders, looking forward to the CTC-MTMM cycle for highschool. Maybe look at Lynn's posts at http://graceandfur.blogspot.com for encouraging tips

Re: Placement for kids with dyslexia
Have you looked at the first weeks of CtC, RtR, and Rev2Rev? I would look at those and see what you think they can handle with modifications you are willing to make.
