Another cool homeschooling moment thanks to HOD

Post by LynnH » Mon Apr 27, 2015 11:01 am

We are in week 32 of the WG guide and we just finished reading "Mystery in the Frozen Lands" which is part of the living library and is historical fiction about the search for what happened to Sir John Franklin and his crew. My son really liked this book. It leaves off with them knowing what happened to Sir Franklin and his crew, but they didn't know what had happened to his 2 ships. When we finished reading I pulled up the link I had found earlier in the year about the discovery of one of his boats, "Erebus", in the Arctic ocean. We watched a video that confirmed what we learned in "Mystery of the Frozen Lands" and then showed footage of the sonar image and underwater video that confirmed it was the Erebus. My son was fascinated by it all. The book had drawn him in and made him want to know what happened. It became very real to him. This was a good reminder to me of why I don't use textbooks for history and why I feel like the Living Library is important.

I couldn't agree more. My 10 yr old has an amazing grasp of history and my 8 yr old with some challenges can converse about events the average adult probably has to think seriously about to get straight. You can't beat living books!

That IS a cool homeschooling moment! :D I am sure that was fascinating! Yes, I too love that living books evoke emotion and often our sons long to know more, for the learning to keep going. :D I do not believe I ever had that moment in my high school years. When the homework or quiz/test, was done, I wanted to forget it and move on - free up space in my mind to memorize and forget the next thing I'd be tested on. Living books - what a better way to approach this!
