MTMM For 11th grade

Post by April0922 » Wed Mar 25, 2015 3:01 pm

Hi, I am just really getting a good look at HOD....It looks really good. I am wondering if I could do MTMM for my dd who will be in 11th and never used HOD before or should she do the new US history that will be coming out?

Hi Michelle :D A few questions for you...Are you needing US history, and what time periods? How much writing is she used to doing? And how long is her school day now? Are there any subject areas you really need covered for graduation? Either option you mentioned may work, but certainly, using the new guide will be easier as far as scheduling is concerned 8) It may be nesesary to add to the MTMM in some areas...

Hi Michelle! Great questions from pp I'd love to hear the answers to as well! If you could share what your dd has done previously for high school, that would really help. Also, if you could share specifics about her according to the placement chart, that will help us give you the best advice possible! We have used HOD for 12 years, and we have enjoyed it at every level, including high school. I think you would love to do HOD for high school! We just want to be sure we give the best possible placement advice for your specific needs. Thanks!!! :D

OK...well she has been using The Mystery Of History vol. 1,2 and will finish 3 this year which ends at the year 1707. So I would like to pick up around that time and yes she does need US History. She does bible readings, Life of Fred Math in Algebra this year...will do Geometry next. Also is doing ABeka Biology and ABeka World Literature. She will finish Japanese I and go on to Japanese 2. Her school day is about 3-4 hours and lots of other extras...piano lessons and gym at a fitness studio and she rides on an equestrian team ( lots of riding) She lacks reading books ( I have to push her to read....it takes her forever to get through a living book) As far as writing...she loves to write and writes all the time for fun. She writes stories. We took a grammar break this year but will do easy grammar 11 next year. So I love the look of HOD....what do you think for her???
Thanks so much,

Thanks so much,
Thanks for getting back to me! I think that dd could use MTMM for 11th grade. I think MTMM is a better choice than the new AH guide for dd for several reasons. MTMM will be more in keeping with dd's reading, and it will let her enjoy and transition into the living books approach more. MTMM is more in keeping with dd's amount of time she is used to doing school each day as well. MTMM takes about 5 - 5 1/2 hours each day to complete (WG takes more like 6 1/2 hours). To do MTMM for 11th grade AH credit, dd would want to do...
MTMM Economy Package with President's Study (including required resources from RevtoRev, U.S. History Atlas, and What in the World? 3)
MTMM Basic Package
MTMM Extensions Package

For 1/2 credit Economics... here is a quote from Carrie in a previous similar thread...
We are going to be including the book Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? and Common Sense Business for Kids in MTMM. Students will read one chapter each week from these economics-related resources and write a one-sentence or one line economic principle that they gained from the reading in their Student Notebook each week. These books do a great job of getting kiddos to begin thinking about economics, and this type of thinking pairs so well with the study of history from 1880 (or so) forward to present day. :D

While this is only the beginning of an economics study, it would be a good time for high school students planning to use MTMM to add more to the study for high school credit in economics. This could be done by adding the Bluestocking Guide to Economics and the books that go with it. Hazelett's Economics in One Lesson is another good, short book to consider. Another excellent economics course to consider adding would be R.C. Sproul Jr's Biblical Economics. Another painless way to add to the Economics would be to do Notgrass Economics. Our own oldest son is doing that his junior year. One last economics option would be materials from Financial Peace University, however this falls more under the "Finance" heading for credit (so it would only work if your state allows a choice of doing Economics OR Finance). So, there are several ways you could go about adding enough for .5 of an economics credit for high school students doing MTMM (as the base will already be scheduled in the guide as a springboard).

It sounds like dd has Science, Geometry, Lit./Grammar, and Foreign Language planned for next year. To fill in the rest of what she would need, here are some options...

To round out her English credit, add composition using either WWTB Vol. 2 (which is high school credit worthy and planned in MTMM already anyway) or Gr. 11 Essentials in Writing (which is planned in WH guide)

You could also add to Bible in MTMM for a half or full-credit, depending how much you add.

Of course, you can borrow any portions of WG or WH if desired for electives (i.e. Logic, World Religions and Cultures, etc.).

HTH! :D But, what do you think?

Julie
