One-Year American History??

Post by deb » Wed Feb 04, 2015 9:54 am

Before finding HOD last year, I had planned for my DS to take one year (1 credit) each of Geography, American History, & World History, then 1/2 year/credit each of Government and Economics/Personal Finance. I'm trying to determine if I can make this plan work using HOD.

Last year (7th grade) he completed the second half of CTC, and this year he is working through RTR for 8th grade. He is 14 but has several learning disabilities so he places well for these guides without extensions (although I sometimes read the extensions to him because they are too great to miss!). We use DITHOR 4/5 (because of his reasoning/writing skill lack) with some books at a higher level than 4/5. He is able to use the left-hand side of the guide, the science, and the poetry/devotional. We use different math, grammar, and writing because those are a HUGE struggle for him.

This is my dilemma: I think he will place well in Rev to Rev (for everything except writing, grammar, and math) for next year beginning in August for 9th grade. But I really, really want a one-year American History course. Rev to Rev and MTMM seem to contain a lot of world history as well as American History. I love that about the Hearts for Him Through Time series, but I just don't feel like I have the luxury of taking 2 years to get only 1 credit of American History. This might be crazy, but would it be possible to use both Rev to Rev & MTMM in one year and just skip portions of the guide that are not directly impacting American history? I realize that I will not get a beautiful notebook at the end :( but the notebook pages are such a struggle for him that we have quit using them anyway.

I plan to use DITHOR 6/7/8 using some yet-to-be-determined books (probably from American Lit or the storytime/extension books). He would do the advanced option of Rev to Rev science, the inventor study, music appreciation, and worldview study paired with our own Bible program. I am trying to prepare him to attend a technical/trade school or a small community college. He will not use HOD writing (although we might choose a lower level of EIW that HOD uses), grammar, or math.

Any ideas or comments will be welcome!

I think based on what I have read from the beefing up posts, that you can count the history in Rev2Rev and MtMM as half credits and then add in the government and economics to those two guides. So, you would do 1/2 US history and 1/2 credit government with Rev2Rev. Then you do 1/2 credit US history and 1/2 credit economics/personal finance with MtMM. Then, you would use the WG and WH guides as written for the last two years. That gets you the exact credits you want without having to push too much together. You would add in the suggested items for economics and government, but those don't seem to be hard to implement it looks like.
Mom to
DD16 (completed LHFHG-WH, parts of US1 and 2)
DS14 WG (completed LHFHG-MtMM plus some of LHTH)
DD13 MtMM (completed Rev2Rev)
DS8 Bigger (completed LHTH-Beyond)
