Reading help and other ?'s
Re: Reading help and other ?'s
As far as I can remember, you do not need to write in TRL.

Oh this is great to know! Phew! You do not know how that takes a load off my mind! I have been mulling this over and over thinking of the different placements of my children and I just really would like to keep them on their own level. If that means back to back guides then that is what needs to happen. Thank you:)

The only thing I would suggest if you do have back to back guides is not starting them at the same time... Make sure your older child is off and running, being as independent as they can be, even if that's just doing copywork or math work after the lesson or whatever. Then I like to start the next child half speed for a unit or two before moving to full speed.

I see what your saying. I like this idea a lot! Should I stagger them this next year for Beyond and Little Hearts or wait until Preparing and Bigger?MomtoJGJE wrote:The only thing I would suggest if you do have back to back guides is not starting them at the same time... I would even stagger them for Beyond and LHFHG. It's much easier to focus on the older child and make sure you know what's going into the guide and what they have to do daily and that THEY know what's expected of them. I say the older one first because you already know what's going to happen in the lower guide because you've already done it. Even though it's new for your child, it's not new for you. For the older child, you both are learning the guide.

Gotcha! This should be easy to do. Thank you!

Re: Reading help and other ?'s
I have somewhat changed my mind on this back to back guide business.
I am beginning to think it is not a big deal at all, as long as dc are placed properly. I am teaching Bigger Hearts for the third time through right now with our last son and absolutely loving it. Granted, the three times were not 3 years in a row, but I have enjoyed coming back to it. If I were doing back to back guides and arrived at doing BHFHG and PHFHG at the same time, I may consider going half-speed with BHFHG until we hit our stride in each of the guides, but then again I might not. If things are going well, I've learned to try very hard to not overthink the future. There are so many pacing possibilities with HOD, that should someone need to slow down, I'd just go half-speed. I also would not break from doing HOD, but would rather alter pacing as needed, for often times momentum in skills is lost when doing something different, and families end up coming back right to where they left off in HOD, only having to backtrack and review as skills were somewhat derailed by the switch. Slow movement forward with HOD is better than switching to something else and returning to it. The sequence of the skills taught from guide to guide is an absolutely wonderful thing for us moms to take advantage of. It helps our dc be successful in taking on needed independence as they mature, and it also helps them move forward in each of their skills seamlessly from year to year. I know often times families stress about high school (I did prior to using HOD for high school). What I have found is just the opposite. High school with HOD is going awesome with our 10th grader! He knows how to use his guide for assignments, directions, projects, etc. because he has been slowly trained to do so over the years. The transition to high school went so smoothly because he was well prepared having done all of the previous HOD guides, and having learned to take on independence gradually. This is the harvest for us!
HTH!

Re: Reading help and other ?'s
I second you, Julie
I tried taking a break and doing a different program..my son cried three weeks into it, begging to do HOD. We are now back to CTC, half speed, and much more at peace. This is my "fits and starts" son, and I guess I just need to be prepared to slow down when needed. Thanks for all the encouragement and helpful tips.
