Complete Rod and Staff Writing Assignments?

Post by coastalmom » Mon Jan 12, 2015 9:22 pm

I was wondering if dc are to be completing all the writing assignments in Rod and Staff - even though, for example, in RTR they are completing a separate IEW writing program. This answer may be stated somewhere but I couldn't find it.
Thank you!

I don't know what others do but I use the TM as a guide. IEW is so full and takes my son about 40 minutes to complete. Therefore, if the R&S writing assignment falls on a day where he has to write a rough draft or final copy for IEW, then I skip the R&S writing. We go over the lesson orally but that's about it. I don't want to burn him out, and I am sure he will be fine without a couple R&S writing assignments :-).

I believe the plans have your child complete both.

We do all of R&S orally. Ideally we'll add some writing in eventually but this is our first year with HOD and it's a step up in writing for my kids so as long as they're getting it I don't assign any writing. My oldest does the tests at the end of each unit (R&S 4) as I have them but my younger ones don't.

Blessings,
Rice

The intention is to do the Rod and Staff writing assignments along with the other writing program. I am pretty sure Carrie schedules the writing programs with the assumption that the Rod and Staff assignments are being done. She will therefore skip some of the assignments in the writing program if she feels it has been already covered in Rod and Staff.

This is exactly right! R & S English teaches different writing skills than the writing programs in each guide. The skills are more clear-cut, step-by-step, general type writing skills than can be applied cross-curriculum (i.e. how to write a good summary, how to create a good outline, how to take notes properly, etc.). The writing programs are more creative in nature. Both are important to do, as they teach different things. As was mentioned, doing a good portion of R & S English orally helps make the lessons clip along without sacrificing retention. If there are 2 writing assignments assigned within R & S English for the day, we usually orally/on marker board do one of the two together, and then I assign the other one to be written. Here is a link to a thread where Carrie describes how R & S English works in tandem with the writing programs...
