CTC: Basic Package Option 1, Extension Package, both? Help!

Post by creekmama » Mon Jan 12, 2015 4:43 pm

Hello, ladies. I will soon be ordering CTC, but I need help deciding whether to order Basic Package Option 1 History Interest, Extension Package, or both.

My son will be 11 in April. If he were in school, he would be starting sixth grade in the fall. We have used HOD since he was five, and we love it. My son is a left-side-of-the-guide kind of guy. He loves reading about History, and his test scores in reading and history are strong. He is also easily overwhelmed and a tad lazy. (He gets these charming qualities from his mother.) Both of us are still working on developing the habit of attentiveness. He is not overly sensitive to violent content, and I trust Carrie's book choices.

So what are your thoughts? My son is asking for both packages. It's always hard to know with this one whether to push a little harder or ease up. This is the kid who keeps me guessing!

Thanks!
Kelley

My 2cents (from someone who's done some switching with Preparing/CTC myself this year) is that if he's done Extensions before then continue with those. If he hasn't then it would be up to you if you wanted to order them just for free reading - to have good books on hand that reinforce what he's taken in his school work.

Definitely order the History pack to use in the Story Time box!

My 2 cents! :)

Blessings,
Rice

CTC is a pretty big jump from Preparing, especially in the amount of writing. If you add the extension books then technically that is more writing since they are supposed to do written narrations sometimes with them. If he struggles with writing then I think I might hold off on the extension books until you see how CTC is going. You could always get just a few of them for fun reading.

Hi Kelley! :D I'd get the Basic Package for sure, and maybe have him 'earn' the extension package to read purely for fun? Maybe once he has a month under his belt and is doing all of CTC quite well, showing you he's giving it his best attention and effort, you could surprise him with the extensions and let him just read them at his leisure for pure enjoyment! :D
