typing - Write With The Best

Post by jacynamommy » Tue Nov 25, 2014 10:36 am

Today in Write With The Best (we're in CTC), my son had the option to write his paper or type it. He wanted to type it and did a great job. My question is...when and how do I teach him to type correctly...with proper hand placement? Is that something HOD covers at some point? I would greatly appreciate any input!

HOD doesn't cover typing. I know Julie has stated before what they used, but I don't recall what it was. We started out with a free website and then moved to typing instructor platinum. Unfortunately with the tremors my ds has in his hands he just can't do the 10 finger style, but he is a very fast 2 finger typist.

Thanks for those links, farmfamily! Carrie uses "Typing Instructor" too, and we have both had good results with it. It is completely independent - another bonus. :D

Thanks for these links. I was able to read them and see an appropriate age for typing :-)

I have had my kids tested in the past but use an independent teacher evaluation for my state's requirements yearly. She recommended starting typing for my 9 year old year this year. I always felt like 9 was a little young. So I think we will definitely be waiting until 6th or 7th grade :-)

FWIW, my kids start whenever they're interested. I gave them time in school when the oldest 3 were around 6/7/9, starting with BBC Typing, then Mavis Beacon. The youngest of the group (probably about 7 by this time, plugged away at it and even the 2nd, but the oldest, especially was more motivated when we switched to Typing Instructor about a year later because it WAS more fun than Mavis Beacon.

My next guy we'll probably officially start with BBC around age 9 (he's allowed to play it for computer time now if he wishes), aiming for some ability (knowing the letter keys, even if slow) by the time he hits Jr. High. The youngest of the original 3 is now 9 and in CTC and he's fairly proficient. He is allowed to type 1-2 subjects per week, depending on a variety of circumstances. The oldest (now 12) still prefers the hunt-and-peck method but does all right (if I'm right there to watch/remind) with his hands on the home row; unfortunately he's the one with Dysgraphia who would find it the most help if he would put a bit of work into it to become more proficient!

Blessings,
Rice
