many mistakes in Singapore 3B
My 12 yo is behind in math--but we can't speed up.
She is 3/4 of the way through 3B--and I would say that she misses almost 1/2 of all of the problems in her lessons if I don't walk her through things. The word problems are especially difficult. We go OVER AND OVER AND OVER how to work a problem--how to figure out what we know, what we don't know, what are they asking, etc etc etc..... She will do a problem--most of the time she has basically found 2 numbers to work with and she "does something with them". She never does a 2 part problem without help. It really makes me want to pull my hair out! We were just doing problems where you need to find common denominators to compare fractions. I did a jillion problems talking it all out--she will maybe do one correct and then she can't think about what to do with the numerator with the next problem. I can't imagine how she will ever be able to do the next math book.

Do you think that manipulatives would help? If she is a hands-on or more visual learner maybe she needs more manipulatives? Or a tutor, or a switch of some kind. Obviously she's really not getting the concepts with what you are currently doing. Have you had her tested for any kind of learning disabilities?

Re: many mistakes in Singapore 3B
Have you tried looking up you-tube videos on this? Funny thing, my dd struggled with this too until I download an app on my iPad that was that by MathTutor. There is an owl on it. There have several of these apps. One for long division. One for long multiplication. And several others. They are GREAT! I might suggest looking into that too. For my dd, she is a visual learner. She needs the Singapore method to understand and keep doing it but sometimes she struggles with catching on. I would look at you-tube videos for this or look at an iPad app. Once she did that, she got it! And she did great after that. But that app helped her tremendously.

Thanks! I will look into those things. I think I've just been lazy and think that if I say the same thing a few more times and increase the volume--maybe she'll get it! haha

I know what you mean! Sometimes it is so frustrating because it is clear as can be 1 day for us. And that day she goes over it and does it correctly for one lesson. Then the next day she forgets everything she ever learned in math
That is just her though. She is very artistic and creative! God did not make her to be an engineer LOL.

Re: many mistakes in Singapore 3B
Good morning, Gwenny!
I was smiling as I read your post, as Riley and I are currently on 5B Singapore, and he needed quite a bit of review to complete the problems that had him converting fractions to have like denominators. I believe that 3B is the first time this skill is introduced. This is a TOUGH skill with a lot of steps, and it is reviewed multiple times in the upcoming years of Singapore. After working through these problems several days in a row with Riley now in 5B, he got the steps down pat!
Then, the next skill was dividing fractions, which requires the difficult step of multiplying by the reciprocal of the second fraction. This set him back for a few days, and then he got that down well, but when we did the review, it was confusing to him when to use the reciprocal as the problems were mixed (i.e. some adding fractions with unlike denominators, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing). Again, after working together awhile on recognizing when to use the reciprocal, he did well. Through all of the boys' math through 6B, I have found it important to sit right by their side and help as needed, with much patience and encouragement (the patience part is admittedly very difficult for ME
). We work all of the Textbook problems together, making sure to work them in the way instructed by Singapore. I try to help set them up for success by pitching in as needed on the Workbook problems, and when I do need to pitch in, I use the Singapore Textbook's way of teaching it, often on a marker board with markers. Singapore Math is difficult enough that leaving their side can mean a setback IMO - and so not worth the 10 min. away to throw in laundry or whatever it is I'm trying to quickly do.
I hope something here can help - have a super weekend!
In Christ,
Julie

I guess I don't know how much to "help". It seems like if I talk out the word problem every time with her, she'll never be able to do it on her own. It's okay to talk them out? (if you get what I mean by that--"what do we know? what are they asking? I draw a little picture, etc)

Yes, that is what I would do. If she doesn't know, she doesn't know. I would just keep helping her if you need to. Each level of Singapore will review a lot of these things too. So if she doesn't understand now, she will get to see it again in the future and hopefully understand then.

Re: many mistakes in Singapore 3B
How about creating a list of steps for the word problems, etc. You could laminate it (or put it in a page protector). Then she can refer to it for all word problems, following the steps.

Re: many mistakes in Singapore 3B
Absolutely ok and even recommended to 'help!' I try to look at the Textbook as my teaching time. So, I do the talking, the leading, the modeling of the work and each of the problems, drawing attention to the sidebar info and using a marker board as needed to model working out the problems. Then with the Workbook part, I sit by their side, and remodel the process as needed, or give 'tips' or 'help' as needed. I like to write directly in the Textbook or Workbook as I give tips. I try to show how to use the methods Singapore has introduced and model the thinking process. The sidebars with the kids' thinking bubbles are teaching helps to model the thinking going on in solving the problems. I always talk through those, and that seems to help. For example, here is a picture of my notes in red pen as I taught this textbook lesson (and BTW I meant to say 5A instead of 5B in my last post)...Gwenny wrote:I guess I don't know how much to "help". (if you get what I mean by that--"what do we know? what are they asking? I draw a little picture, etc)

Then, here are some pics of the Workbook parts that followed the Textbook, and my notes in red. I had Riley draw each part out at first, following the model shown in the textbook. As we progressed further in this skill, he could do a lot of that in his head, but I almost always require the child using and practicing the given model's way of doing things at first.

You can see I am helping Riley quite a bit in the Workbook segments. By the Practices and Reviews, he generally does better - though he still needs reminders or tips. Usually I can quick do one or two examples of how he was taught, and he remembers and can do that section more himself. Unlike denominators was hard for him though. For your dd just being introduced to unlike denominators, she probably is pretty much unsure of what to do overall. I know Riley was overwhelmed by all of the steps at first at least. Just remember it is coming back around again and again and again!
I used this same method with Wyatt all the way through 7A, and then he moved into Foerster's Algebra 1 with great success. He is also completing Geometry with great success this year. So, all of that working together earlier on was so worth it! I remember Carrie doing a post for the Teaching Tips part on Facebook, and her saying that math is something to do 'with' our kiddos or to stay by their side the entire time pretty much all the way through. I have found this to be quite true, though in high school I can put my big teaching time in up front at the start of a concept or chapter, and then leave and pop back in and out. I hope something here helps!
In Christ,
Julie

That is very helpful. I'll make sure to stay by her side. I thought I was doing too much hand holding.
Another question: at the beginning of finding common denominators, the went from having denominators of 2 and 6 or 5 and 10 to throwing in a couple of things with 5 and 12. Do they do that to just see what the kids do with that? I, of course, knew how to do that, but it was never taught or mentioned.

Re: many mistakes in Singapore 3B
Which lesson are you referring to? I saw some stuff that said which is a larger fraction. But I couldn't find this specific lesson.
I do know that book 4A and 4B will also talk about this again in the future though too.

Re: many mistakes in Singapore 3B
My husband (who teaches math in our house) has mentioned that several times in the section in 3B that works with fractions they've added problems in there where the method of solving it wasn't really explained. I don't know WHY they do this, but it's not really fair to the child IMHO to expect them to know how to solve it without help. He usually ends up going through a whole lesson on whatever is needed and helping her through it.

It's Practice 6B in 3B TB and exercise 35 is the workbook.

Page 72 and 73 in the TB do go over exactly how to do it. But it is covered again in future levels as well
My dd is doing this in 4B right now. I would just hold her hand through it each step and explain it. I would also have her flip through the book and look at what the book is doing again.
