How do you do your DITHR schedule--I know you take time off of the guide every 6 weeks. But how long do you take off?

Re: DITHR-momtoJGJE
We take off three weeks for DITHOR. The projects or whatever at the end we do while they are doing the regular guides. I basically assign those and then see the finished product. I really have no idea how long or hard they work on it.
Re: DITHR-momtoJGJE
Thanks. I remembered reading about you doing that, but couldn't find it anywhere. I can't figure out how people search for things and come up with posts so easily and quickly.

Re: DITHR-momtoJGJE
Yes we will do roughly 6 units of the regular guides and then for three weeks we will do DITHOR, dictation, math, and grammar.... because I tend to skip those things if we are running behind or I just forget about them.
Re: DITHR-momtoJGJE
Hi I was just wondering if you could explain a little bit more how you do your guides as well as DITHOR? I am trying to figure out how to get it all done every day before to late
We're doing 3 guides, 2 full time and 1 part time. I was maybe going to wait to do DITHOR in Preparing next year but it was suggested that I should try to start with it this year at least part time. Have a great night!

Re: DITHR-momtoJGJE
I don't do DITHOR with the regular guides. First I should say that we school year round, taking off when we need to for trips or whatever. I found that that 30 extra minutes of DITHOR per day was just too much for us and we were not doing it more often than not. So I guess it was about a year or maybe 1.5 years ago I decided to alternate. I thought it would give us a break every once in a while from our regular work routine with the regular guides, plus I would be more likely to make sure they did complete genres, and it would allow me to have more focused time with both the 3Rs and my kids that aren't in DITHOR yet.
So far it's been a lot of fun doing it this way. We have one genre left in the levels they are in right now, and Julianna is almost through with the ERs. Which means that they will all be on the same schedule when she begins DITHOR without anyone having to wait on anyone else.
It's not a set 6 units regular, 3 weeks DITHOR.... sometimes they'll do 8-9 units, sometimes only 4. It really depends on when I feel we need a break and on our regular schedule. For instance, we will take a week or two off at Christmas time with no school at all (my kids are weird so they will probably still do math) and February tends to be a month we need a break. So they will do regular guides from now through February with the exception of a week or two. So it might even be 10 units this time before we do the last genre.

Do you get a guide done each year, or does it slow you down a little? We take off at different times of the year also, for a camping trip or holidays, extra company, etc. I try to school year round also to make up for times like those. Just wondering if my taking off from the guides would slow me down to much--I guess I need to really get out the calendar and see. I can see that my children would love a little break with just working on things like DITHR and math, etc. It's intriguing.
We are going camping the whole week of Thanksgiving. I'm thinking about just taking their readers and math and DITHR so we can do something for 3 of the days.

Re: DITHR-momtoJGJE
We definitely get in a complete guide with the ones that are 4 days per unit. And my child in Bigger is ahead anyway (I like Bigger for 3rd grade and she's in 2nd), but she doesn't do DITHOR yet. So yes, we do get complete guides done each year. But our year is from July 1st to June 30th.
Re: DITHR-momtoJGJE
Hi again :)just a few more questions. I was wondering if you try to do a whole genre in the three weeks that you do DITHOR and how much of the dictation, grammar, and math do you try to get done in that time? It sounds like such a great way to do everything. I'm not sure about schooling year round but maybe to the guides that way you need to? I've been enjoying your posts
have a good day,

Re: DITHR-momtoJGJE
Yes, each genre of DITHOR is scheduled for 15 days (then the 5 for the project, but that happens on their own time and we are back to the regular guides during that time). So we do get through a whole genre each time. That's why I picked 3 weeks
.
My kids are weird and love math (ok I love math too, so that's probably why....). So basically they just do however much math they want to. I will not TEACH more than one lesson a day though. If I have to teach a second lesson, and not just remind them or whatever, then they are done with math for the day. I have one child who does generally one page of math per day. Not one lesson, one page
She likes the math, but hates the time away from everything else. Since she's ahead (based on yearly testing we have to do here in NC) I'm good with that. If she drops down to grade level or below I'll re-evaluate. I have another child who would literally do math all day if I'd let her. So she's the main reason I won't teach more than one lesson per day.
Grammar is mostly one lesson per day. Occasionally we will do two. Occasionally we don't do it. They are right along with their guides as far as where they should be in R&S and ahead by testing standards.
Dictation is where I fail as a teacher. I forget about it 90% of the time. Fortunately, the CM based education they get throughout HOD and constantly seeing correct spelling in great books helps me out a lot. So when I do remember it they jump pages at a time. I have them do about 1 out of every 4-5 passages for a few pages and then about every other one until they miss something. So we will do 6-8 weeks worth of dictation in a day. Probably not a good example to follow
But again, based on testing, their spelling is well above grade level, and they are pretty close to where I figure they would be if we did dictation as scheduled in the guide.
As far as schooling year round, we have always schooled year round. I took off from T-giving until after New Years one year back when my oldest was in 2nd grade. They were begging for work by Christmas and behavior was awful because they were totally off schedule. I've tried since then, but the most we can make it without other things happening (vacations, camp, etc) is 2 weeks. And those 2 weeks are normally filled with chores and outside work. Doing DITHOR this way gives us a break from the massive amount of work each day (relatively speaking of course
) yet doesn't feel like a step back like half speed. It also shakes up what they are learning about and gives them a chance to mull over what they've learned through the regular guides.
