Carrie and anyone else I have a question?
Okay some already know I just found out I am pregnant with #6 here! Very unexpected I have to say! Anyways I was planning on doing three HOD in the fall, but now I am thinking about doing just two. I have an 8,6, 5,4,1 year old now. I am thinking about doing LHFHG for the 8 and 6 old they both will turn 9 and 7 mid-year. My 8 has a LD and is only at a K level in reading anyways. I am doing a different program for reading which includes LA, but would still do what LHFHG one too for the activites and I have singapore math books for them also. So do you think it is okay. Then next year I would do Beyond for both of them. My son if he was in public school would be in 3rd grade and my daughter in 1st. So I am having a hard time with this I do not have alot of support from family to homeschool in the first place and they don't think I should be doing the same work for both of them. But if I look at the placement charts they both seem to be more on track for LHFHG. My son is advanced in math ,but that is sepearte anyways. What are your thoughts?

I think that sounds like a great plan, Sheila! Carrie always encourages you to go for "developmental level" rather than grade or age level and if that's where your little guy places, then that's where he is right now. I would check my state requirements, however, as you might need to add more grammar, writing, spelling, etc. but that would be pretty easy.
I'm glad you are coming up with a plan for next year....one less thing to worry about, right?

I think that sounds like a great plan. Up through 3rd grade in most public schools they do very little history and science anyway. Both of your dc would probably be getting way more in those areas than they would in ps and you already have reading and math that is on their level. I think you are doing a fantastic job figuring out how to make it doable for you and still a good fit your dc....kudos
Congratulations on your new blessing

Sheila,
As long as you're adding a higher level of math, grammar, spelling, reading, and handwriting, you will be alright combining your kiddos in LHFHG (due to your little sweetie's LD). You may want to look into the "Beyond..." guide to use for your older one's spelling lists/activities, weekly grammar lessons, emerging reader's schedule, and math lessons. These would up those levels for her.
Blessings,
Carrie

congrats!!! what a blessing!!
I wanted to address for you the input you say you have from family who don't think they should be combined-I always point out that even in public school the kids study the same topic, different levels, and that's all you are doing at home. They each have their own math, you have different expectations for your older children's work then they younger's work, and such. I have my 12 year old doing "Bigger" with his 9 and 8 yr old brothers, so-it's ok! really!

Sheila,
I was just wondering after rereading your post, if you wouldn't be better off combining the 8 and 6 year old into Beyond. Even with a LD in reading, kiddos can often listen and respond to higher level material very well. I just wouldn't want LHFHG to be too easy for your older one. I'd hate to see you hold him back in all areas just for the LD in reading. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this as you're pondering.
If we keep on talking through it, you'll find what works best in the end!
Blessings,
Carrie

I have both LHFHG and Beyond I was planning on doing them spereate but now with a LO coming I am not sure I can. So if I did Beyond do you think my younger would get confused at times because she did K this year ( I just threw things together no real program)
I could do it I have though about my older one also that maybe it would be boring for him. I actually had intended on doing Beyond with both at first, but then got LHFHG becasue my DD was geting fustrated that my older one knew more. But maybe that will work out there are some things that are sperarte like math, phonic/reading. What are you thoughts? Anyone?

Hi Sheila! First of all, congrats on expecting, and I pray you have a good pregnancy!
After reading all of the posts here, I think doing Beyond... is a good idea. It seems like by the time you add in all that you'd need to add in to make LHFHG work for your older ds, that it would just be easier to do Beyond... anyway. You can see how it goes for your dd. If it ends upthat there is some unhealthy competition going on between your ds and dd, you may want to just do LHFHG too at half-speed with your dd. You could do the left side of the plans one day, and the right side of the plans the next day. That would only take 45 minutes a day to do with her, and it might just be easier in the long run. Then, whenever you felt ready, you could begin doing it all with dd.
I know how hurtful it is to have family questioning your decision to homeschool, but don't let that get to you. One thing I've figured out the hard way with in-laws is that it's easier to say as little as possible about what we're doing homeschooling. It seems like the details I've given are just sometimes picked apart and misinterpreted anyway. Other than the general "things are going fine" kind of talk, I steer clear of anything deeper.
In Christ,
Julie

Sheila,
I agree with my3sons! By the time you tweak "Little Hearts..." as much as it sounds like you'd need to, it is most likely easier to just do "Beyond.." with both and see how it goes. Since your kiddos will be turning 7 and 9, Beyond... is a better fit skill-wise for their ages.
You may need to teach the language arts and math (right side of the plans) of "Little Hearts..." to your younger, but your kiddos could combine for the left side of "Beyond.." and the storytime.
I was just feeling like you may be holding your older one back too much by keeping him in "Little Hearts..". The good news is that if you get going for awhile and think you should drop back with both to "Little Hearts..." it's easy and economical to do (since you already own the guide).
I like to give my kiddos a chance to grow into their guides at the beginning of the year, knowing that they'll hit their stride as the year moves on.
Blessings,
Carrie

I have really been thinking about it and I think you all have givien me such great advice! I really think doing Beyond will be the perfect fit for both of my kids and I am really looking forward to starting it. I am planning on trying to start by doing just one side a day after the 4th of July. thanks again ladies!
