Evaporated milk for Beyond 26 day 4

Post by countrymom » Sun Nov 02, 2014 9:59 am

We will be on unit 26, day 4 in Beyond tomorrow and the activity calls for the students to add food coloring to milk to see how the colors mix. Will this work with evaporated milk or do I need a store run? We drink soy milk, but I have learned from experience that rarely works well :) Thanks!

I think the fat content is the main thing, but I don't know how much Evaporated milk has. You could always try it when the kids aren't around just to see. Surely you have a neighbor or something who would give you a little milk to do it with. It's pretty fun!

I think evaporated milk has twice the concentration of milk to water as regular milk. I make evaporated milk with powdered milk for a few of my recipes. To do this, I just double the amount of milk powder that I put into the water to make it the same consistence of evaporated milk. If it were me, I would take the evaporated milk and add 1 can of water to it. That (I would think) would make it the same ratios as regular milk. I don't know if I would drink it as such, but I think it would be the same consistence at least.

We have 1/2 our family drinking soy and the other 1/2 regular milk. I can't recall which milk I used for this experiment. But, when we made ice cream we used soy and it worked great. My daughter loves ice cream so she is tickled to be able to make it whenever she desires (within reason of course).

I am not sure about the evaporated milk. I say a true scientist experiments and has failures, asks why, and repeats. I have mixed food coloring in milk and painted bread so if the experiment flops you can use the paint. I like watching videos of experiment as alternative to a flopped experiment.
