Beyond Unit 15 Day 3 Science

Post by StephanieU » Wed Oct 29, 2014 2:06 pm

This is the science activity where you are to make curds and whey. I had seen others post in FB that their's didn't work, but I thought I would try it as written. It was a failure just like others had mentioned. You end up with a thick milky mess, but there is no separation. I gave it lots of time (over an hour), and after about 30 minutes I even added more vinegar to see if that was the issue.
So, then I referred to trusty google, and saw a few sets of instructions saying ot hear the milk first before adding the vinegar. I heated mine to a boil, stirring almost continually. Then I added the vinegar quickly. It was instant success.
Also, I read you can use any acid. Lemon juice or orange juice often gives a different but "better" flavor than vinegar. I might try that when my younger two get to Beyond.
I thought I would share this so Carrie was aware that almost no one has had success with it as written. But, with the very easy modification, it works perfectly!

Oh that is exciting news! Why didn't I think to use google

I think we may do that experiment again in the next couple of weeks because we are a while away from anyone being in Beyond again.
