Spanish question

Post by snadig » Mon Sep 29, 2014 6:38 pm

Hello Ladies.

We started WH last week after deciding my oldest needed to move up from Geography. I thought she would be doing Geography, but the Lord had other plans. So here we are and she is in the right place.

Regarding Spanish- We kept the spanish from the Geography guide, thinking she would need this book before starting with the recommended spanish in the WH guide. Maybe I am not using it right, but she seems to do go through like 4-6 lessons at a time with ease. She reads it and tells me what it says no problem. After one week she is on lesson 19.

Should I slow her down? Quiz her some how? or move her up? She isn't too excited about the life pacs, but I don't want to have spanish take over if we used something different.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

thanks for your help.

My ds is doing the Spanish in the WG guide and I know Carrie has said she feels it is necessary before going into the Lifepacs. Since it is only a 1/2 credit then dc should spend around 30 minutes a day on it. My ds does the lessons as scheduled in the guide which is either one or two lessons a day. He then has made flashcards for each new word and he reviews those either by himself or with me saying the words out loud as he does them. I think he is up to 55 words and phrases now so that is a lot of cards to go through. He then spends however much time he has left listening to the audio files and practicing along. He starts with that days audio and then will pick out a few more to make sure he gets practice in speaking. I think once you get into the grammar lessons if she goes through it too fast she will start having trouble with retention and get confused.

We loved using "Getting Started with Spanish" last year, and it did a super job of preparing our ds for the Spanish in WH! :D We made flashcards as well, and I think you will find it necessary to slow down soon, or certainly in the future, unless dd has a photographic memory and a real knack for learning Spanish. The words do begin to accumulate! :D And, as this is an introduction to Spanish and only a 1/2 credit, there is no need to rush. We followed the daily plans, and found this helped us balance our day well in all subject areas, as it gave us time to finish everything (which still took around 6 1/2 hours usually). HTH, and I hope you have a wonderful year with WG! :D

Thanks for the feed back. We are actually doing the WH guide, but thought we better start with the "Getting started with Spanish." Really based off of Carrie's recommendations off the website.

We have slowed down and are using a white board for her words. She is reading them back to me everyday. So the next step I think will have to be flash cards or something. She seems to do very well, so will see how it goes.
thanks,
Stacey

Oh, well in that case, you may be able to go faster through it, as more time is allotted for it in the WH guide, and dd is a year older. It sounds like your dd is doing so well with Spanish! Who knows, maybe she will be one of those gifted people who have a knack for foreign languages?!? Wouldn't that be neat?!? :D We need people with this gifting today, especially people who are devoted to the Lord.
