World Geography question

Hello wonderful ladies.

We just received our guides so exciting........but a bit overwhelming for me. I have a question regarding the Fundamentals of Literature. I couldn't find the thread it may be on.

Here it goes: I am trying to understand how much of the information in the teachers guide you go over, and if I should have the story pre read before our teaching time. I am a bit worried about pre reading, as I am a very slow reader. I have not pre read any of the books my kids have done, try to skim, but I just read slow.


What part of the notes should she read on her own? She reads very fast, 30 pages would take her 15 mins to read.

You might not have to go over much of the teacher's guide at all. I would let her read the story and answer the questions as directed in the guide. Remember her answers won't be exactly the same as what is in the guide. Then look over her answers if it is a day she writes them or just look in the guide as you discuss them. If she seems to be right on track with things and have the general idea that is in the TG answers then I would call it done. If she struggles to come up with an answer that makes sense then let her read the answers in the guide after you discuss it. I think having her try and read the rest of the information in the teacher's guide would be overwhelming. It sure is for me. I don't think you should have to pre-read it at all since the answers are right there for you.

I think the most important thing is to read the selections yourself, if possible. I was very hit or miss with this last year, and we were able to have better discussions when I did read the pieces. At this level of homeschooling, it takes much effort on mom's part, and it can be overwhelming. I tried to read the notes, but so many of them were too "textbooky", that I only discussed a few with my son. I hit the high points, but didn't go into finer detail.

The answer key is quite extensive - so thorough that I readily will share I didn't read the Lit before discussing it with Wyatt. Reading the key is almost like reading the selection anyway. (Though I agree it would be neat to read them beforehand - I simply do not have the time to read everything and teach well. So, I'm picking teaching and choosing not to feel guilty about it. ) I made the mistake of fishing for the perfect answers according to the answer key when Wyatt and I did WG BJU Lit at first. It was stealing the joy. I eventually went to having him answer with as much insight as he had, and then had him read the answers in the teacher's guide afterwards. That went much more smoothly, and it was helpful for him to read the way the key worded the answers, and the depth of the answers. This helped him work on adding more to his answers, though he never made it to answering just like the key nor as fully as the key. However, the year was an excellent one for growth for him, and I see the fruit of it now in his literary synthesis sheet he is doing along with his literature novels in World History (as well as in the depth of his written narrations). So, my advice would be not to 'kill the love of lit' by drilling for the exact answers, but rather enjoy the journey, and let the very detailed answers in the key be follow-up reading after discussing the rest together in a less formal way. I was pleased with the results, and Wyatt had a much better year. HTH!
