First Day of World Geography guide

We finished our first day today and it went well. Several of the subjects he just read the introductions which was actually very nice because it allowed him to become familiar with the books without having to do much yet. He surprised me in that he is really excited about Spanish and loves how doable the book looks. Spanish has made him very nervous so I think he is so relieved to see what the book for this year looks like. He also is excited about logic, which is funny because he tells me all the time that he isn't logical, he's a teenage boy . He struggled with A Book of Discovery, which I knew he would. He was back to square one with his oral narrations which again didn't surprise me. I let him re-read a section and then narrate it to me and then keep doing that until he had narrated most of the key words. It isn't ideal, but I know it won't be forever. It is a challenging read and a different writing style so it will take him a little while to get used to it. That is just one of his quirks, if you will, that go with his CP. Overall it was a really nice start to our high school years.

I know others had their first days also so I would love to him about your day.

It's not our first day. As such, it was a bit of a drag. But we made it through and I feel the Lord gave me patience with many of the things that came up which is a big praise!

Yesterday was our first day. My 9th grader is doing WG. I decided to go half-speed for the first week (so finishing a unit in 2 weeks instead of 1). So far, I have not heard many complaints from him...which is the best to expect from this child who does not like school but would rather be playing basketball 24/7. The only mild complaint that I got was about the reading, lol. "Why do I have to read 28 pages of this book...why not just a chapter?" Cause this is high school dude. Get used to it.

I absolutely LOVE WG so far. LOVE IT! I originally thought to cut out the Living Library b/c of the extra reading but after reading through the 1st book, I decided to just make it an expectation that he would read it. Period. Perhaps not all of the books, but most. I like the discipline of the one sentence summary, though he does not. It is an important skill to learn. LOVE the Bible portion, too. I just love everything about WG! Can't wait to start my middle boys in CtC on Monday and my 4th grader in Preparing. I've never done CtC as we skipped that Guide with my older boys so I am excited to start. And, of course, I adore Preparing. So grateful to be back with HOD this year.

Hi, Lynn!! So glad to hear you're both off to a great start this year!

We're actually in our third week of school this week! (Hard to believe!) We're running 5 guides in our house this year! We started Aug. 4th and we did the first two weeks at half speed for everyone. I have never done that before, and let me just say. . . .we are SO doing that every year! It was great! We had a whole day to get used to only half of our regular day's work. It really helped the kids to adjust to the new level of work expected, and get to know how everything worked.

Our oldest doing WG this year has been loving his studies!! He did say at the start of our first week, "Well, its a lot of reading!" But now, he's actually acclimated really well to the readings and finishes them in pretty good time. He's constantly telling me about something amazing he just read or learned. Our focus this year is on quality and truly learning what we're learning! Amazingly, our days aren't as long as I thought they'd be, but of course that might change as we go along. We're now on a full speed schedule this week, and things are going great. Despite some bad colds going through the house, yesterday he finished at 3pm! We were both pretty encouraged about that. One of his favorite subjects is science, and he's been quite happy with the PAC-IPC course. He absolutely LOVES the MicroPhySci Lab Kit!!! He's been having a lot of fun with that, so far.

I'm so thankful for HOD, as we embark on our high school years for the first time. It's a true blessing to have such amazing, interesting, faith-building books to learn from! Thanks HOD!

Well, maybe it's just the allergies kicking in or my mid-40's, but I'm all teared up reading this thread. I just feel like I really KNOW all of you who responded here, I care about each of you, and I long for you to have a great year for so many reasons, too many to share. Thank you for sharing, and I pray that you all have a memorable year with each of your dc! This board builds relationships. Thank you for being ladies that have been a part of it for the journey!

Thanks for sharing, Lynn! And, Julie, you are so sweet. Yes, those tearing up moments happen the longer we mommy people, I think. And I love hearing the others' stories as well. So encouraging.

I thought I'd chime in after our first week of the WG guide, too. My oldest used it last year so I knew what to expect. To be honest, I was nervous about how my twins would handle the workload, and especially my son handling the larger amount of reading. I was so blessed by our first week of school. It went so much better than I imagined. Yes, the days were longer than last year for sure, with my son's days lasting quite awhile (he is a slower reader than his twin sister). But the encouraging thing was that they both really enjoyed the work and the readings and did not complain about having more to do. In fact, I think they both felt much more grown up and felt proud of taking on the responsibility of a high school work load (and this is not something I would have expected from them either).

Their favorites were the World Religion and Culture study - both loved it and we had some good discussions! They both enjoyed the Lit readings as well - especially Miss Hinch - such a great mystery! My son really likes the Archaeology book and how it shows the reliability of the Bible.

Overall, it was a great week and I'm so thankful for this good start to our school year. Again and again, I thank God that HOD is available for the high school years to give my kids such a rich and varied learning experience - and that I did NOT have to put it together for them!

Can't wait to see what the WH guide is like for us this year - coming soon!!!
