Here is my week in review while it is still fresh and while I have pictures to post!

This week we did Unit 2 of LHFHG, Unit 30 of Beyond, and Unit 23 of Preparing.

LHFHG was about the first sin, Noah and the Ark, and the Tower of Babel. The Rhyme in Motion as always is genius and ties them all together. The various activities through the week reinforce these important Bible stories. My DD really likes reading from History for Little Pilgrims and then reading the corresponding stories out of the Family Time Bible. I just love the illustrations in the Family Time Bible. They make the stories come to life. I have been tweaking my schedule as sometimes my kids rise at different times and I think things go together in different ways. I had done LHFHG completely right after breakfast, making my 5YO done with her school very early in the day. Then I read a Facebook tip from HOD saying that it was still good to break LHFHG up into short segments, helping those younger ones with shorter attention spans really focus better. I switched it back and I agree, that's a better way to go about the time. If only my Preparing child was an early riser!

Beyond we enjoyed. This week was about the wagon trains going West across the country. I don't know what my DD got, but I really learned about the difficulties they faced and the uncertainties. The stories are very positive, but there were just so many dangers. I can't imagine being that bold! My DD is really taking off in reading. We reached the Christian Liberty Nature Reader in the ER books and she loves reading about the wasps. She tells her sister, her dad, and anyone else who will listen, what she is learning about them. I really see her starting to be able to read well enough to understand what she reads and think about it. She has started reading some short chapter books on her own. During their free time in the afternoons most often my oldest will sit down and read and my 2nd used to always complain that she had nothing to do and no one to play with (she can play with the 3rd born now but until just recently my 3rd daughter was also in her room, sometimes napping but usually not).

Preparing is at a very interesting time in history for me. We finished reading about Germanic peoples in Europe, we read about the Huns, the splitting of the Roman empire, Constantine, the "Christianizing" of the Roman empire. It almost seems like we are racing through this period in history too fast (probably because I'm not personally as familiar with it). I know it's supposed to be an overview. She's started One Small Square: Coral Reef for science and the experiment at the end of the week, making a model of a coral polyp, was a big hit and very informative. Sadly I couldn't find my camera when we were doing that activity, though I did get one of my 3rd born daughter with chocolate in her teeth (because she got to eat the rest of the banana and chocolate). My DD thought a coral polyp (or the model of it at least) was very tasty. She is reading Freedom Crossing for DITHOR and this is a very interesting book for both of us to read. It is really interesting to think about the conflicting sides of the Civil War times and slavery in America. It is so easy for us to see how wrong it was, and difficult to see how people thought it was right. But then again, there are great sins in our day that many say are right.
