CTC needed supplies and a question

Post by jacynamommy » Mon Aug 11, 2014 3:02 pm

Hi ladies! I'm trying to figure out what supplies I need to purchase for CTC. Will we need a lined notebook for writing? Also, what would you recommend for storing the poetry paintings in? Will a 3-ring binder with page protectors work, or is the watercolor paper too big? Another question...my son is using this for 5th grade (we've done HOD since he was in kindergarten)! He will be using English 4 Building with Diligence this year. I noticed you use half for this year and half for the next grade...should I be concerned that next year he'll be in 6th grade and only have finished the English 4 book???? Or do grades not really coordinate with book numbers? Thanks!!!

We haven't gotten to CtC yet, but I do know ther eis the "setting up " post for CtC that hopefully will help with your first question:

As for Rod and Staff, the numbers aren't perfectly lined up. Rod and Staff only goes through 10 I think, and the last two aren't really grammar. So, Carrie has it scheduled to complete 6 by the end of MtMM (8th grade normally) and then 8 by the end of high school. That is more grammar than most kids get, so don't be worried at all.

I bought a portfolio for the watercolor paintings. It is just the right size for the watercolor paper and has built in page protectors to slide the paintings into. I got ours at Michaels using a coupon. It still sits on a shelf in our school room and I like to pull it out and look through it.

Thanks for the idea Lynn! I will look into that. I'm a bit confused about the right kind of paints and paper to buy. I went to the Miller Pads and Paper website, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what is what! Maybe I'd be better off just visiting a craft store??? Thanks again!

I just three hole punched our watercolor paper and put it in our binder with the student notebook pages. We used looseleaf paper for anything she needed to write and put that in the binder (and science experiment pages, etc) as well. I had subject dividers this year, but I think next time I'll just put the pages after the notebook page unit they were from.... I'm not sure.

I got all our paint supplies from Michaels. I asked them what they would suggest for someone on a budget, who wanted quality stuff for a 5th grader. They led me straight to the different things. Everything held up great.

As far as R&S, as long as you get through 6 by 8th grade you are good. We are about 2/3 of the way through 4 and just finished CTC a couple of weeks ago because we work ahead in English just for that reason.

Lora Beth,
Thanks for the help! Do you know, from CTC and after, do the R&S books only get used 1/2 a book a year? If so, we may need to step it up a bit, that would only put us finishing book 5 by 8th grade. I thought we started on time like we were supposed to...so confused about how we could be behind. We've been doing HOD since the beginning (K). Do you know where I can find more info on the R&S books and when to finish what? Thanks!

RtR has 1/2 of Rod and Staff scheduled. Rev2Rev and MtMM have the option of one full book or 1/2 of a book, depending on where they are at.
So, you will do:
CtC - First half of 4
RtR - Second half of 4
Rev2Rev - All of 5
MtMM - All of 6

(This is copuied from the Rev2Rev package page: For English, customize with the options below (or use your own text). Both texts below are scheduled in our guide daily, giving you a choice for your 6th and 7th graders to do all of English 5 or to do the first half of English 6. The following year students will complete either all of English 6 or the last half of English 6. In order to keep the area of language arts in balance within our guides, while still allowing us to utilize a rigorous English program, our goal is for students to complete English 6 by the end of grade 8. This will prepare students well for high school level English requirements. Students in grades 6 on up who have had little grammar instruction, should use English 5 since it is considered to be a foundational level of the text._

I am not sure if you were referring to all supplies or not.

For spelling, grammar and common place, I bought one composition book each. I don't reuse them year to year and won't be reusing them next year. For science, you will need a blank note pad for drawing. I use a binder for history, geography, bible and writing. For writing, I don't use a notebook because they are going to be looking at things they previously wrote and will need to copy it. So I wanted loose leaf paper. A 1.5" binder to hold these papers would be plenty big. You will need colored pencils for notebooking - I love getting the artist loft brushes from Michaels. You get 36 for $5. They last and have a nice variety of colors.

Since you already have another thread for watercolor, I think that is it.

Anyone have any ideas where to buy the art supplies that are listed? I have looked at millerpadsandpaper.com and cannot seem to find the brushes in the correct size?

I personally bought all my stuff from Hobby Lobby (brushes, paper, mixing tray) and United Art and Education (paint).
