Tips for using eBooks with DITHOR

Post by kamariden » Tue Jul 22, 2014 1:59 pm

Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone has used eBooks along with DITHOR and how they divvied up the books to match the number of days (5/10/15). In the past I've drawn stars in the corners of the pages to indicate where he should stop each day. However, this year I'd like to try doing a couple of the books (not all of them) in ebook format for multiple reasons I won't go into. I am hoping someone else has tried this and maybe has some tips on how they did it. I'm thinking of maybe creating digital bookmarks for him in advance?
TIA!

Most e-book readers have bookmarks you can click to hold your place in a book. You can also highlight text and just highlight where he should stop reading.

I haven't used ebooks with HOD but I did with our last curriculum, using a Kindle Touch. I found that how I marked the divisions/stopping places depended greatly on the student and on where they were stopping.

If the book is divided into chapters and that is where you stop, it's easy enough to tell them to stop at a chapter break.

However, if they are to stop mid-chapter I found that it was easiest to highlight the entire second section. Bookmarks (a little number inserted into the text) weren't even seen while reading. I started by highlighting a few words where the next reading would begin but my oldest would read right past it without noticing; for a more observant or conscientious student, this might have been enough. If the entire text of the second reading was all highlighted then it was an obvious change and even if he changed the page, he would eventually notice that the background was different. I marked in his instructions/checklist whether the daily text was highlighted or not.

HTH.
Blessings,
Rice

I bought too many e-books last year and we had to work at who could read with the iPad when, which was very annoying. We found it much easier to curl up with actual books. Just my experience. Plus, my emerging reader had to form skill at reading with his finger as he went and not touching the screen ( throughout the whole Beginner's Bible, oi) not fun.

My dd uses her kindle part of the time for dithor or other hod books. I type up a reading schedule for her at the beginning of the year. If it were me I would wait to use ebooks until a little older. My ds doing emerging readers this year still needs the paper book.
