How does HOD present/teach philosophy

Post by Mississippi Mama » Wed Jun 18, 2014 5:12 am

I am trying to pick what I will use for my 9th grader this fall.

He used the Bigger and Beyond guides and I have since pieced my own books together for him.

I'm ready to go back to a planned curriculum. All of HOD's goals line up with mine.

In looking at Cathy Duffy's Top 100 book there are some fascinating texts ( and not really living books) in her books that presents the different philosophies of the ages and world views. All these sound like I want to buy them, but they would take up the bulk of his school day. I've also looked closely at a few Christian unit studies and guides that teach these subjects very well....so good that now I feel I've just got to have a curriculum that helps me educate and train my son on these varying opinions that are out there.

So please tell me how these are incorporated into the middle and upper guides. Thanks !!!

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by philosophy. If you mean a philosophy course like you would take in college or if you mean worldviews. As far as teaching different worldviews that is covered in multiple ways. In the middle school guides it came in often in the course of studying history when examining motives behind different historical events, as well as in the 2 Apologia books that are used in Rev to Rev and MTMM. The different world views/religions are presented, but in contrast to a Christian worldview. In the 9th grade World Geography guide it is covered in the World Religions and Cultures course. Some of the living books present the different worldviews through the eyes of those who are missionaries in that culture or those who have become Christians and still live in the culture. The other books used in this study are more informational in style and give the different religions/worldviews of different regions of the world and what influences those beliefs. The student does notebooking using graphic organizers to outline these things.

In the World History guide it looks like it is covered in the discussion of the events of World History. Specifically the books the "People, Places and Events of World History" and the "Critical Thinking Using Primary Sources from World History" look like they will cover this type of information. The entire history sneak peak for the World History guide is found here viewtopic.php?f=6&t=15079

I will say that my ds has done all the guides from Preparing to MTMM and I feel like he has a pretty good grasp of the different philosophies of life that have existed throughout history and how those contrast to the Christian Worldview. I have read most of the World Religions and Cultures books now that he will use this year and I think these books will give him an even stronger understanding of how other religions and cultures view the world.

I agree... I don't think there is or is going to be (I could very well be wrong) a guide written to cover other religions/philosophies.

However even just through CTC we've talked about Islam... we've talked about Greek/Roman gods... we've discussed just in general life how some people think that just being good will get you to heaven and how some people don't believe in heaven/God at all.

So I'm not sure if that is exactly what you are meaning, but other religions and views are covered...
