Need Placement Help, Please:)

Post by blessed2b » Wed May 14, 2014 12:31 pm

Hello Ladies,
I have been an avid stalker of this board for years, but this is my first post. I have used HOD off and on with my dc for many years now. At some point we have used LHTH to CTC. (I have suffered from an acute case of grass-is-always greener syndrome  )However, I have made the decision to use HOD as written for the rest of our school journey. :D I am very unsure about what to use this next year for my two older dc.
This past year we used CTC as our 6th grade program. I did not think that it was enough of a challenge for them, however. Both dc have done DITHOR level 4/5 and are ready for level 6/7/8. They can write 12 sentence narrations. We have always used BJU for English and they just completed the 6th grade text. This year they wrote a 4 page research paper, compare-contrast essay, a historical fiction piece, and studied all 8 parts of speech and diagramming.
I really want to be able to meet them where they need to be as we jump off into jr. high. So here's my question, should I skip RTR and put them into Rev2Rev? Or should I have them do RTR with extensions? How much work does the extension package add to RTR? Is that too much of a jump to go straight to Rev2Rev? I am praying about this decision constantly since we are entering the pre-high school years. Part of me wants to keep them on track to finish MTMM by the end of 8th grade so that they can complete all of the high school guides. Another part of me wants to do the RTR guide because we have not gone into that time period very heavily in the past. Will the time period in RTR be covered in the WG or WH guides for high school? Without being able to really look at both TMs, it makes these decisions very difficulut
Any help that you sweet ladies can give me would be very helpful. I have gleaned so much God-honoring wisdom through the years from you precious ladies. Thank you for your time!

Blessings!

Have you looked at the placement chart again with fresh eyes? Where would they place today based ont eh skills in the chart?

They are 11 & 12 years old. I feel that they place better in Rev2Rev than RTR. However, I placed them in CTC this past year because I know that correct placement is vital. I felt it would be better to be cautious than to place them in a program that is too hard. Which is where I am again. I have looked (and studied) both first week samples of each program, and still am unsure.
Thank you for your quick response!

Blessings!

If they did everything in CTC as written and you felt it didn't challenge them and they fit more in Rev to Rev according to the placement chart then I think you could do Rev to Rev. The steps up from each guide are incremental. The biggest steps are in amount of reading and in the length and amount of writing. It sounds like they can handle the writing. As far as will the RTR material get covered in WG guide. I don't think much of it will since it's focus is totally different. As for the WH guide I am sure some of it will get covered, but I am sure not in the depth it is covered in RTR. One thing you could consider if you take the summer off is that you could build their summer reading program around MOH3 and some of the storytime books. MOH3 is a very engaging read as are the storytime books.

Thank you LynnH for your reply. I never thought about covering that time period this summer with their reading. I haven't used MOH before, but I will look into vol. 3 and their storytime suggestions. That way the time period gets covered, but I don't hold them back academically. I appreciate your replies ladies!
