electronic books

Post by roseannvj » Wed Feb 26, 2014 4:04 pm

I hope this is okay to post here. If it is not, please let me know. I am wondering if anyone ever uses electronic versions of the recommended books. If so, how do you figure out how much to read each day, since there are no page numbers on the electronic books. We travel a bit. So, the fewer books we have to pack the easier it is to get school done on the road. Thanks!

For some things, I can just use the chapters. HOD even mentions that some are on public domain and can be obtained free. For example, we have the Burgess books for LHFHG on the Kindle app. One week we lost our book (it ended up under the couch), so I just read the chapters from the app instead of the actual book. We did have to skip on thing since we didn't have the picture, but it worked. I have also downloaded books for next year that have been free on Kindle or pdf just to have in case. For storytime/read-alouds and DITHOR, it is pretty easy to do based on chapters. History and science is harder because you need the actual location in the book. Sometimes you can figure it out from the topics and chapters though. It just means a little more work for you I think.

You would have to use chapters listed (if they are listed) and/or the "Key Idea" in the box to figure it out. With some books I would say it is possible to do, though you may just want to sit down with the guide and make notes in pencil to figure it out. You can easily do it with Storytime in Beyond and Bigger because whatever you read you just pace it yourself over the 20 days. History and science would be harder as noted, though at least in earlier guides you usually read one chapter a day. Often by the "Key Idea" you could figure out if a chapter was spread out over a few days. Maybe you could buy the History books, use those to figure out where in your e-reader and make note of it, and then resell the History books? Or borrow if you know someone else with the same edition of the guide and book as you.
