Help with Placement

Post by OhItsErika » Tue Jan 28, 2014 6:45 am

My son is 3.5 yrs old. He is fairly advanced and seems to be more suited to your Little Hearts for His Glory curriculum for 5-7 year olds. He is beginning to read, is very articulate and uses appropriate grammar in speech, counts very well and is beginning to learn math concepts such as addition using manipulatives, and he can sit relatively still for 90 minutes at a time. I haven't spent much time on handwriting with him yet so he isn't ready for much written work. He can draw lines and circles/ovals but we haven't practiced letter formation yet. He could probably use more practice with motor skills but with an extra focus in this area im sure he will progress very well. In all other areas he seems ready for the 5-7 curriculum. I would appreciate advice and guidance.

I would not advice using LHFHG with a 3.5 yo. First, you want kids to be kids. This is something I have to remind myself from time to time. Although LHFHG is still fairly fun, it really is a K or 1st grade curriculum. If your son is ready for some math, handwriting, and phonics, then you could start those things from LHFHG. But, I wouldn't start the left side for at least another year. I would also read a little on Charlotte Mason philosophies before beginning HOD, as this is the basis of the curriculum. It might help you understand why the guides are so gentle in the early years.

If you plan to start now than I would say his age is not ready for the more "mature" content of some of the LHFHG boxes.
If you mean in the fall I would wait until July/August to reevaluate. He may be ready to start it slow by then.

My 4.5 year old is finishing up LHTH with additions. We are doing fine motor skills workbooks, (the Rod & Staff ones that are listed in LHFHG have some before them that are great to use!), sight word cards, and number games.
This is her second time through it. Even with using it before I would not have placed her in LHFHG at 4. (when she started it the second time). She is just now ready for the Learning About History portions & she is mature for her age & knows how to be still (& listen) for awhile.

Hope this gives you a good idea.
