Hi all. I am using CTC now. We did Prep last year. I have 4 kids. Because of their varying skill levels, they are all in Prep and it works great for all. My youngest actually does the best job with narrations. He is adopted from Korea and it is just his gifting or bent. So… I have a 14 y.o. in 8th grade using CTC without extensions. She cannot handle the extensions. And she is very weak in math (she does about 2 hours daily of math and has since grade 3. She just really struggles with understanding) so hasn't had enough math to handle Physical Science this year, but maybe could next year. Then I have an 11 y.o. who is a much stronger student than 14 y.o. and is advancing past her in math this year. I have never taught high school before.
How would you handle 14 y.o. next year? Can I give her enough credit with RTRef without extensions? Her comprehension skills just aren't strong, despite years of reading to her and with her. We read the T boxes orally and I bought 5 sets of CTC so everyone has their own copies and this has helped.
Any ideas from those of you doing RTR now on what she should do next year?
How do I give her credit?
What would you suggest I do for science for her? I'd like to have the others continue with RFR as written, although ds11 would be fine doing science with dd14 actually. He finishes CTC in lightening speed! I just added extensions for him.
Thanks!

Re: Highschool placement and credits question
I would look at your state requirements and what goals your 14yo has. It sounds like (from your description) that you aren't envisioning her going to a 4-year college at 18 years old. So, that gives you more options too. If your state isn't strict on things, then personally I would just keep going at her speed. Maybe she doesn't finish "high school" officially until she is older, but that is fine. I think it is better to teach at her level than to push her ahead where she can't do the work and just gives up.

Re: Highschool placement and credits question
What if you just read through something additional with your 14 year old like Signs and Seasons without adding any additional assignments? Then your student could just complete the science as is for an earth science or astronomy credit.

Re: Highschool placement and credits question
If RTR is where she is skill wise then I agree you teach to her level and since doing that amount will probably take her the amount of time a typical high school credit does (120-140 hours) for the year then for her that is a credit. You don't need the extensions. I hope that makes sense. My 14 year old ds is doing MTMM this year without extensions. If he were still in ps he would be in high school, but he has some challenges with writing and short term memory issues so we consider this his 8th grade year. However if something changes down the road I would have no problem giving credit for history this year even though we didn't use the extensions.
As for science I agree that if you could do something like signs and seasons or another earth science type book where you are just reading it to her then you could call it earth science. Or you could do option 1 and option 2 for science. The AIG book says up to 8th grade, but it sounds like it might be at her level. Also Physical Science really doesn't require much math so that might be a possibility also, but it would probably be best to use that her sophomore year.
