New to HOD thinking about Bigger Hearts
New to HOD thinking about Bigger Hearts
My daughter is the oldest child and will be 7 in April. This will be our second year homeschooling starting in the fall. We used BJU (Bob Jones) for the first year. I am thinking that Bigger Hearts for His Glory will be a good start for her. She reads extremely well and independently. Has a basic comprehension of what she is reading. She can compose original sentences (4 or 5) although sometimes her letters are backwards. She does well with grammar and phonics. She is not as strong in Math, but does well enough. I am just curious to what the math is for Bigger Hearts. She knows how to count with money. Knows 10's, 1's, and 100's placement. Can count by 2,5, and 10. Understands basic addition and subtraction problem, although not as quick to answer but can count on in her head. Understands fractions. I hope this helps. Thanks!

For Bigger you can use Singapore Math 2a/2b and they have plans for them in the book or 3a/3b and there is a schedule in the back. I would recommend giving the Singapore placement test if you are switching in from another math. http://www.singaporemath.com/Placement_s/12.htm

I would also look and compare the first weeks for Bigger and Beyond. Beyond would be the normal 2nd grade guide if you do one guide a year. Reading is somewhat separate from history in HOD through Preparing. Instead of her reading the history, you will be reading it, and so the maturity of the books can sometimes be hard on young kids. Normally, the middle age is perfect for the books used. If you went with Beyond, you could start DITHOR at her level, which would challenge her in reading and writing. Or you could go with Bigger, and go slower than full speed if necessary.

Re: New to HOD thinking about Bigger Hearts
You will want to look through HOD's placement chart and decide whether Beyond Little Hearts or Bigger Hearts are the best fit for where your DD is at. Probably you could do that assessment in May, or whenever you finish up what you are doing now. The Singapore placement test will tell you where to place her in math, but you wouldn't choose your guide based on that because that can be done no matter which guide you are in. Hands-on is written in the guide for 1A/1B in Beyond and 2A/2B in Bigger so you can buy the other guide if that's where your DD places in Singapore.

The second page as you scroll down is probably more critical for placement because those areas are harder to adjust if your child is not yet ready for the level. You can look at a sample week of each guide also and see which seems the best fit. Be careful of wanting to place too "high" because the skills of narration especially will be relatively new and are difficult to learn. But with patient perseverence she will get there!

Thank you all so much for your help. I think that I will start her in Beyond in the fall.
