LHFHG for a newly turned 5yo??

Post by momof3kids » Wed Jan 01, 2014 3:56 pm

Hi all, my second son will be 5 next week, and we will be starting back with unit 21 of LHTH, which has been good for him. We will probably be finished by mid April-first of May..so he will be 5, and 3 or 4 months by then. I have read before that there is quite a jump between LHTH and LHFHG..so my question is LHFHG too much for his first real K experience??....is it better to do something else maybe for a year, until he is 6, and then start....or do you just go through it more slowly??....I think he is pretty much where he should be, to be turning 5....he can write most of the letters through P (which is where we are in LHTH)...counts great, but can't write many numbers without help...don't know for how long he can sit still for storytime??...just trying to figure out what he needs. Had thought of holding off anyway, with the thought of combining him and younger sis in a couple of years....but don't know. If we finish in May..will prob take the month of June off and start in July....now that I think about it..lol!
thinking out loud..as you can tell! would like to know what has worked well for others!

If your son is doing LHTH and able to handle it, he will probably do fine with LHFHG. It is a gentle kindergarten year. My son loved it. You can always start out 1/2 speed if you think he needs a little time to grow into LHFHG. Many people do this by doing the left side of the guide one day and the right side the next.

My dd turns 5 & finishes LHTH next month.
I plan to start LHFHG, doing about 3 days a week the first of March.
It will be a bit of a jump, but I don't want her losing the momentum she has going now with LHTH.
I think she will grow into it just fine this way & by August be ready for full speed.

I believe your son will do just great. He actually sounds a bit more advanced than my dd.

Yes, a young 5 YO can do it. Writing numbers is part of the math, but you could work on them with tracing or get a workbook. I haven't seen the new math workbooks, the old ones spent a week or two just writing numbers before starting any math. You can always dot them and let him trace them if he knows the answer too.

The issue is the length of the school day. LHFHG is probably twice as long as LHTH (as you know LHTH is short). So your son would have to be ready and willing to do more work each day (or you can do 1/2 speed). The storytime can be challenging too, but it is meant for them to grow into it.

You may also run into issue down the road with guides getting too hard too quickly, with him starting on the younger end of the age range. But you can always slow it down at that point.
