Change in the New Year?

Post by glperky » Tue Dec 17, 2013 11:36 am

When we started school in Sept. I started my 8 yo DS in Between, after just two weeks we went down to Beyond and added cursive and R&S 2. It's all very easy for him, but he enjoys it. When I read this post, viewtopic.php?f=6&t=14496, I wish I would have just stuck with Bigger, not realizing that he would grow into the skills that he was struggling with. Anyway, life happened, I got very sick and was in and out of the hospital and had ER surgery, co-op, and vacation so we have only finished though Unit 5 day 2. So, I just looked at the placement chart for Bigger and my DS places solid in it. So, I am wondering if I should just switch to Bigger after the holidays? We haven't done Beyond since mid-October. My DS misses it but I don't think he would bat an eye if we moved up. Thanks for any input you care to share.

If he places solidly in Bigger, I would definately change him. Even if you go at half pace for awhile to just get him used to the different boxes and skills.

If he seems ready for all the skills and everything, and Beyond was seeming too easy, then that does seem like the right choice. Let us know how it goes!

I'm so sorry to hear this!!! I have just prayed for you and hope that you are on the road to recovery.

I would go ahead and do Bigger Hearts and just stick with it no matter what, slowing it down if you need to.

May God bless you in this New Year with good health and a fresh beginning! :D I feel I need that too - God's mercies are new every day. That is such a comfort! May we all rest in His strength and take comfort in His unconditional love for us as we see His plan unfold.

Julie,
Thank you so much for your prayers and encouragement. What a blessing. I have prayed for you, too, to have a "New Year with good health and a fresh beginning." We are excited about getting back to HOD. My eight year old ask almost daily, "Is today the day we get to get back to it all?" This coming for the boy who didn't want anything to do with school until we started HOD! What a change and blessing.

I have one more question, well one more for now anyway.

My DS is still reading the emerging reader books in Beyond. If we move to Bigger in January and continue reading the emerging reader books, should he be ready for the reading in that is required in Preparing when we get there?

Hmmm.... the reading in Preparing can be a little challenging. Especially science. There are hard words in there. I am still listening to my DD read from it to make sure she gets all the words of animals she's not familiar with and stuff. So that would make those boxes not necessarily independent. Ideally you would want him to be independent by the middle of it so he is ready to keep going on. You can also always slow it down if it gets too hard at some point.
