Another Dictation ?

Post by mrsrandolph » Wed Dec 18, 2013 11:39 am

I am confused by something I just read about dictation on "Simply Charlotte Mason". The site stated that you should watch and correct the child if they make a mis spelling. I thought we were to let them mess up and correct at the end. Then have them repeat it if there are mistakes?

I'm not sure how Simply Charlotte Mason does it, but for HOD yes you let them make the mistake then they "grade" it when they are done by looking to see what they missed, if anything, and then they redo it the next day. HOD is studied dictation so I don't know if that is different from the dictation Simply Charlotte Mason is referring to or not.

Shannon,

CM advocated not allowing a child to see a word incorrectly spelled even for a moment, so she did have students erase and fix any spelling mistakes within their writing immediately. As far as HOD's studied dictation goes, we do follow CM's suggestions with this by having kiddos study the passage first, have it dictated by the parent phrase by phrase, have the child repeat the phrase, and then write it. This is all done from a single reading, without repetition. The kiddos check their writing against the passage in the guide and mark and fix any mistakes right after writing the passage. So, we only delay fixing the incorrect spelling until the child has written the passage and goes to check it. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
