Guess what I was doing at midnight last night?

Post by my3sons » Mon Dec 09, 2013 9:36 am

... Reading "Shane!" :D :D :D On occasions when I am stressed and wishing I could get away but can't leave the home because dh is gone, I try to read at night in a bubble bath for at least 15 minutes. Last night I began reading "Shane" - oh my! I have honestly never read a western, though I've enjoyed watching a few western movies. I could not put "Shane" down! I ended up finishing it at midnight in my bed! My brother-in-law said "Shane" was one of the few books he read with his nails biting into the book as he clenched it - so true!!!! I could not put it down. Thanks HOD for choosing incredible books - no wonder our dc have a passion for reading. Set aside some time and read "Shane" and "A Lantern in Her Hand" ladies - two of my all-time favorites to date. Just be sure you can stay up to finish them! :D :D :D

I just finished "A Lantern in Her Hand". What a great book. It really struck a chord with me. I will have to see about getting Shane next.

Wow, Julie. I'll have to check that out. How was the language, in your opinion? Just curious since HOD mentioned there might be some bad language... I am not afraid of white-out if need be. Heh. Is it actual curse words?

My kids aren't in that age group yet but I do feel a library trip coming on!

That is one thing I love about HOD - my kids are not really avid readers by they are gobbling these books up! They never complain about reading and typically read more than what is required for the date's assignment - even after the school day is done. Love it!

As far as the language, I didn't find it to be too much. The WG guide notes the instances clearly. "A Christmas Carol" is a wonderful option that HOD suggests as a substitution depending on each family's preferences.
