Excited to be back in the ERs!

Post by psreit » Sat Nov 16, 2013 3:17 pm

I wanted to share this, as I have already begun implementing some changes to our reading plan. When we stopped the emerging readers last year to begin the special reading program, we had gotten as far as First Flight. I have the CL Nature Reader, so I thought I would begin where we left off. I had Angie read a little in that, but it seemed a bit too difficult. I don't have Tornado on hand, but I have Animal Adventures. So, I got that book out and had her try reading from that one, and she is doing great! She made some typical mistakes due to the dyslexia, but I would have her stop and look closer at the word and most of the time she knew what it was. Angie was so excited to be reading a chapter book, as most of her reading has been done in early readers. This book is a good fit right now since we are reading through the little House series this year, so she is familiar with the story from the original book. I know I could have taken her back to some of the earlier ER books, but I don't think they would have been as exciting for her. She has good reading comprehension, so I know it would have been too much repetition for her. My hope is to get her through the remainder of the ERs, and then begin DITHOR next fall with Preparing. Now I need to get her back into R&S 2. I wish I still had Bigger, so we could enjoy finishing that. :( But, I need to be content where we are now. I'm just glad to be able to get even one toe into HOD again. :D :D Looking forward to more! :D :D

That is pretty exciting - way to go, Angie! :D It's so good to have you back here, Pam, and I'm so proud of dear little Angie! If she loves that younger Little House series, I believe there are more titles in that series. For free reading time, maybe? The ERS is full of excellent books that help dc get their feet wet with many different genres, authors, and series. I hope it continues to ignite a passion for reading in Angie! :D :D :D

Thanks for the encouragement.

Julie, I mentioned to Angie that there are more of the Little House chapter books. She was very excited. These would make a nice Christmas gift. :)

I am getting an R&S 2 book to get Angie back in that. So, we're getting back on the HOD track. We've actually been reading Pioneer Sampler, so another piece of Bigger still in our homeschool. :D

As one mom of a dyslexic to another, I am thrilled for you! I know the agonies of trying to help a struggling reader and the joy when they experience accomplishments. No one who hasn't walked that road can truly understand the highs and lows. Good for you and your dd!

Laura, thanks for the encouragement. I'm thankful to be off that rough road we were on in the spring. I'm looking forward to the days ahead in which we can once again have fun doing school. :)

This evening, after our service, I went into the small library in our church looking for something. I happened to spot a book lying on an upper shelf that looked familiar. I pulled it down and here it was The Beginner's Bible! I am having Angie finish the ER books, and I had thought about having her read this book since she had done the Early Reader's Bible last year. But, I no longer have a copy of it. I was so thrilled! I don't believe it was by chance that I found that book. Another confirmation that it is time to get back to HOD. :D
