SWITCHING FROM PUBLIC TO HOMESCHOOL IN 4TH GRADE

Post by hopefulmom » Thu Oct 24, 2013 8:23 pm

I did LHFHG with my son as a K4 program and he loved it (just reminded me this morning how he loved the science stuff we did - can't believe he remembers that!), but he really fought me with the reading and at the time, we decided homeschooling was not a good fit for us. He's been in public school from K-3 (currently in 3rd). We are strongly considering going back to homeschooling in 4th grade. In looking over the curriculum suggestions, he fits into the PHFHG (or will by the end of 3rd grade). In other posts, I'm seeing feedback that there is more independent work that is prepared for in the other books. Will this be a problem for him since he hasn't been consistently doing DOH? I will also have a 2 year old and a 7 month old (would like to do LHTH with the 2 yr old), so I'm taking that into consideration, too. I like how the subjects are broken into blocks so we can do them throughout the day or during nap time or at least be flexible (as you need to be with little ones in the house). He loves reading now, so I'm thinking that it will be a better time to switch him if we are going to do this. Also, does anyone resell their used books?

Preparing is my favorite guide, and I can't wait to do this guide with my little girls! 4th grade is a great year to do Preparing if that is where your child's skills fit. It is definitely possible to do the boxes throughout the day.

You will probably love doing PHFHG with your ds! :D I like how you can space out the boxes throughout the day as well. I'd just do a double-check for proper placement with a look at the placement chart for PHFHG...

If he fits well in PHFHG according to the placement chart overall, you are set for a super year! :D If you haven't had a chance to read the "Welcome" message yet, here is that link...

Within that message, it says...
This board is also not the place to post for the purpose of buying, swapping, or selling items or curriculum or to suggest that our customers shop elsewhere.

Just so you know why you are not getting a response on that portion of the post. I think you are going to love returning to HOD, and PHFHG is one of my very favorite guides to teach! HTH, and I am looking forward to hearing more about your year in PHFHG here! :D

I switched from public school to homeschool after teaching there for seven years. I haven't regretted a day of it! :)

Seriously, though, we brought home a child from ps at Christmas his fourth grade year. He placed perfectly in PHFHG...and loved it! He enjoyed the independence once he adjusted and we all had a great year. I had a toddler and a fifth grader that we we were also hs-ing at the time, and it wasn't always easy...but leaning into God and resting in His grace always enabled us to make it through. :D
