Grading for Jr High/Sr High

Post by school4princesses » Fri Oct 18, 2013 3:54 pm

I'm wondering how everyone handles grades with their Jr high and Sr high students. In particular, my eldest is working on correcting her previous work in both math and science. Normally, I give them a point for each problem correct. Does anyone give them partial points for reworking problems and finding the correct answers? Not sure how to handle it so I'd like to hear what other people do with it.

Blessings.

I teach college level math classes, and I give my students two attempts at homework. I mark the questions wrong, and they then correct it. They find they learn more this way, as otherwise they wouldn't even look at what they got wrong half of the time. The second attempt is what I take the grade from. On exams, I have seen faculty give half the points back for correcting things even. With the advances in technology, faculty are even going to systems that allow unlimited practice as similar problems. The students can work an almost identical problem to get their points back. You could always do that - assign the evens (or odds), and then if one is missed, they can do the odd to get the points back.

I decided not to give grades until high school. Prior to high school, I correct all the dc's work daily and go over it with them in our midpoint meeting times and at the end of the day. I use the HOD guides' directions to go through our dc's work together. For example, I use the 'written narrations' guidelines and don't accept the narration until it mirrors those expectations. This has driven home the point that I expect the dc to carefully complete all of the work in their guide to the standards laid out in the guide, and if they missed one of those steps/standards/directions, well, they have to go back and do them/add them/edit them until they have done them properly. They have become careful direction followers and workers because of this expectation. :D Because I don't accept any work that is not at the "A" level, I didn't feel the need to assign grades. Now that we are doing the WG guide for high school, I am using the grading guidelines in the front of the WG guide. They are thorough and easy to use. I have noticed my high school aged ds trying hard to do his best, and he has "A's" in all areas except Logic right now. So, it seems this has worked thus far!!! HTH! :D
