Please pray for better days

Post by mamamag5 » Tue Aug 27, 2013 8:42 pm

Hi Ladies,

We started Rev to Rev this year and my daughter just can't get the work done in a day. We are in unit 3. She is not used to the work load and when I suggested she go half speed she cried and said she didn't want to get behind. I'm not sure how fast she can read, but it seems all the reading (we are doing extentions as well) is overwhelming her and she doesn't want to modify anything. I set a schedule for her and even if she is not done we move on to the new box. I really feel I'm giving her ample time especially for math and grammar, but somehow she just squanders the time. Even if I am guiding her and reminding her that she should be done with a subject she just dawdles. It is so frustrating! I'm afraid I'm going to lose it and become a screaming idiot if something doesn't change. I think because she has never had this kind of work load before she is testing me. I already gave in with the extention book and told her I would read it to her. I think I made a mistake. Now I think she may be just testing to see if I will give in with the other work as well. We've been working from 8am in the morning to 9:30-10pm at night to finish all the boxes for a day. I can't go on like this much longer. I would really covet your prayers and am open to your comments and suggestions.

How old is your daughter? Is it necessary for her to have the extensions. Even if she falls in that age range, maybe it is too much. Otherwise, I would say, just go half-speed for a while, and just reassure her that it is okay to not finish the guide in a year. If it is an attitude problem, then you will need to use discipline in some way. But, it sounds like she may just be overwhelmed, if she is crying about getting behind. If she is capable of doing the work, don't give in. My daughter frustrates easily and will try to use her drama to get out of working. I am learning to know when there really is a problem and when it is that she just doesn't want to do the work. I have just made up my mind that I not going to let her manipulate, and be firm about her getting it done. I'm sure I didn't help much, but want to encourage you to evaluate her work load and make adjustments if needed, but also be firm about what is expected of her. Find incentives to help her get the work done also. Praying it goes better. :)

I agree that you should drop the extensions, even if she is in the age range for them it is obvious that if she is taking that long with her day that they are too much at this point. Have you looked at the time recommendations for each box for Rev to Rev? I know there is a post on here somewhere with those listed, but not sure where. I would then time how long each box is taking her compared to that so you can see where the real issue is. My ds did Rev to Rev last year and he started at 8 and at the very latest was done by 3, and that was with an hour lunch. Are you sure she is properly placed. Has she done HOD before? If not then I would definitely go half speed and do lots of training in each box. Tell her it isn't a punishment, that it is just to make sure that she really knows exactly what is expected and how to do each box so that she can be successful. I will pray for wisdom for you as you try and figure out where the issue is.

That is too long of a day!!!! Put the extensions away! I would probably work right beside the child for a few days to identify what is taking so long. You can go 1/2 speed for a couple of weeks to get everything under your belt. Also, we usually pick something from each guide to skip (ssshhhh!--don't tell). Otherwise, our days went too long. For example, in REV2REV we did not do the Classical Music study.
