Another DITHOR Question...Please help me figure this out

Post by mothermayi » Fri Aug 23, 2013 6:20 pm

Edited to delete my venting  .

I purchased the 5/6 Boy's DITHOR book package and placed a neon sticky on each book displaying the genre. I planned to use the 4/5 student book for my young 5th grader. I have the 6/7/8 student book for my 6th grader. It is our first time using DITHOR.

Here are the questions. Do you place your children in a lower reading level book so they can focus more on the analysis and deep thinking required by DITHOR?

I also bought the 6/7/8 student book for my 6th grader but this is his first year in DITHOR. I read the recommendation in the back of the teacher's guide and it says he should start the 2/3 or 4/5 student book. Well, I didn't know this before ordering it. I must've missed the memo on the website (I've done that before LOL). So how do I know which student book to place my 6th grader into?

I bought the 4/5 student book for my 5th grader but now I'm not sure if I should have him do a lower level as well. His reading comprehension is at grade level but I'm just not sure. How do I determine placement?

Also, if I use the 4/5 book for both students, can I copy the pages or do I have to buy another 4/5 student book?

Thanks!

Since you already ordered and got the 6/7/8 student book I would just look through it and see whether your 6th grader would be able to do it. Look through the activities for the 6/7/8 level in the teacher's guide and in the student book and think about how easy or hard it would be for your student to complete those. Also consider how much easier it might be to have them in the same student book and activities, even if they are reading different books. I believe you could return your 6/7/8 book by the HOD return policy.

You are supposed to buy a student book for each student, their copyright does not allow you to reproduce those pages (which is why they aren't printed in the teacher's guide for you to copy).

Generally, especially starting off, it is recommended to get a lower reading level than what challenges your child in order to allow them to do more in-depth analysis of what they are reading. However, if your children are both strong readers and seem to have good comprehension of what they have read, they might be able to handle it at reading level. Eventually the goal is for them to do it at their reading level, but for those not used to doing such in-depth analysis of what they read a lower reading level is recommended.

Thanks for the info! I'm outside of the return window, as I purchased it in June. I will have to buy another 4/5 book. Plus, I filled out the calendar page so I probably couldn't exchange it anyway.

Your response was very helpful! Thanks a ton!

mothermayi,

At the beginning of each student book on the copyright page this is what is written: "Permission is given to the original purchaser to reproduce patterns and reproducibles for individual classroom use or personal use only and not for resale or distribution."

Since you have already bought the 4/5 student book and if you are wanting to use it for both of your children, you would be allowed to make copies for use within your own family.

Hope this helps,

Stephanie, I believe that is an older version of DITHOR. The copyright rules have changed due to blatant misuse by some. The new DITHOR workbooks are not reproducible. Carrie has a post about it.
