Spelling in Beyond

Post by glperky » Tue Aug 06, 2013 1:16 pm

My DS will be starting Beyond this fall. I think he is going to be a natural speller and loves to spell. Anyway, what do you do if a child picks up on all the words on day one or two, do you still follow the plans for the rest of the week? If not, what do you do? Then my other question is, if we start off on List 1 Unit 1 and the list seem too easy should I skip ahead or keep going? Sorry if these are silly questions. I am a horrible speller and want to do all I can for that not to be the case for my little guys.

Thanks for any input.

I have a natural speller combined with natural memorization skills. What I'm doing with her is if she gets them right first try on the first two days, I do not worry about practicing 3 or more words on the 3rd day. Then the 4th day we do as is. So basically we take the 3rd day off of spelling if she doesn't miss any.

If List 1 is too easy, then the first thing I would do is try List 2. I actually skip the 4th day of spelling if she's got them all correct. She enjoys writing sentences with her words (I let her pick any 3 words).

Oh silly me! I totally forgot to say try list two!

All of mine have started with list two just based on their ability when we did beyond. I kind of forgot that option!

I don't think he is ready for list two, so would I just use list one starting at a point that's not so easy?

I ended up starting where it got "hard" for my oldest when she was in Beyond. The ones that she didn't automatically know or that I thought she needed a little practice with. There are sight words in each unit so look through and make sure he is comfortable with all the sight words as well as the patterns in them. We finished out List 1 and started List 2 when we finished it. Now in the middle of Bigger she is starting dictation, which is perfect.
