What kind of paper for Beyond copywork?

Post by christyg » Mon Jul 26, 2010 5:57 am

Hi! Just have a quick question...........what kind of paper do you use for the copywork (poetry) in Beyond? Is it the handwriting paper or a regular notebook like a composition book? Also, how do you do it with the art work that goes along with the poem? Is the poetry the only thing that they copy each day?

Thanks a bunch!
Christy :-)

All the writing we do with Beyond goes in a regular wide rule notebook. I let her do the art for the poetry on a piece of printer paper... she'll write the title of the poem at the top and I write the unit at the bottom. I know a lot of people use the composition books that have half a page of blank and half lined.... if we did the copywork consistently I would do that, but we added in handwriting so we don't do so much copying of the poems....

You can use whichever you prefer.
I'm using 2nd grade handwriting paper w/ my son (almost 7 yo.) The paper is from Miller Pads and Paper. This son still needs to have the line he is copying right above the line he is writing on, so I thought this would be the best for us. My 9 yo son uses a wide lined notebook and I just print off a copy of the poem for him to work from.

My oldest ds started out on the 1" spaced handwriting paper and used that size for most of Little Hearts.
When he got to Beyond I moved him to the next smaller size handwriting paper.
Now he's using regular wide lined notebook paper or composition book.
My dd on the other hand used the smaller size handwriting paper from the start and can easily use wide lined notebook paper too.
I think it depends on the child and their handwriting ability.
I will say that the smaller handwriting paper (I think it was 3/4" or 1/2") produced the best work from my son. The lines weren't too big nor too small.

We started with the wider lined handwriting paper from Miller Pads and Paper, and then he transitioned into wide-lined notebook paper. I think there comes a time when it actually becomes more difficult for dc to write on handwriting paper lines, as their writing has progressed enough it is too tedious. Just try writing a poem on handwriting paper with large lines yourself, and you'll know what I mean! That's what made me realize he needed to switch over to wide-lined notebook paper (I was writing a model for him on handwriting paper, and I said "This is taking me forever!" My little guy said, "Yeah! It does for me too!" ). Anyway, I think it's important to start where they need to, but then to watch for when it seems time to move to smaller lines as well. :D Here are a few past posts I had about this in case anything here may be beneficial:

Thanks, ladies, for all of your help! Julie, it never crossed my mind to change the type of paper mid-year as their handwriting improved. Great idea!

Thanks a bunch!
